Volunteer Hours Requirement- Utilization of the Spanish Language - to earn the DLI chord
Every graduate of the DLI high school program must complete 20 volunteer hours (5 per year) in experiences using the Spanish Language. The purpose of this requirement is for the students to fully engage in conversational interactions with other Spanish speaking people. Several opportunities will be available throughout the year, but students are encouraged to find opportunities on their own.
Students are encouraged to go on and beyond from the 5 hour/year requirement, but they will only be able to carry forward 2 extra hours a year (unless you are making up hours from the prior year). Seniors must complete a minimum of 3 hours during their 12th grade year, regardless of how many extra hours they have coming into their Senior year. Students and parents will be notified twice a year (end of Fall and Spring semester) with an update of how many hours have been completed.
NO Acceptable activities
Yearly hours cannot be earned doing the same activity. You must have a minimum of 2 different activities every year (3 and 2 hours)
No sibling tutoring. Any tutoring opportunity must be approved and performed with the presence of a school adult supervisor. Although we encourage such opportunities, this is very hard to monitor.
Translation of documents. We will no longer accept these hours since the main purpose of this experience is to communicate orally. Also, the use of translation programs are readily available and widely used.
Hours from prior year from the current one. All hours earned must be recorded and turned in by the end of each school year. We do not accept hours from the prior year. If you earned hours during the summer, turn it in when you return to school.
