Through cultivation of students' talents and passions, STEAM Academy will provide real experiences that inspire learners to lead. This occurs through:
Student ownership of learning;
Technological responsibility and expertise;
Empowerment through internships;
Authentic STEM inquiry learning;
Mastery of expectations.
The Why
When students take ownership of their learning, they become more active participants in their education rather than just the receivers of information. This allows for us to transition into a type of learning where students apply what they learn in meaningful ways, ways that are important to them.
Through defenses and completion of badges, students can showcase and defend their learning by showing their understanding, explain the reasons why and provide evidence in support of that. This process of defending their learning cultivates critical thinking skills and encourages students to take responsibility for their educational journey.
With ownership of learning, students are better prepared to navigate challenges and succeed in both their academic and personal lives.
My Goal/Vision
As a leader, my goal is to inspire both teachers and students to take greater ownership of defending their learning. I plan to do this by creating an environment that is inclusive, with multiple school stakeholders and providing a supportive environment.
Through modeling of techniques and activities done in advisory and classroom settings, students and teachers will be able to develop the strategies needed to successfully defend learning and want to defend their learning.
I plan to provide teachers with the tools and strategies needed to guide students in defending their ideas and engaging deeply with the material. I also plan to guide students and teachers through how important it is to reflect and self-assess through the defense process. It can't just be a one and done, students need to understand they have to make progress and have pride in the growth from start to finish of their defenses.
