Developing a school-wide plan for the implementation of defending learning and logging moments involves creating a structured approach that integrates these practices into the academic culture. As a school each year we develop PLCs that focus on defense of learning to determine if structures that are in place are working and what steps need to be developed.
Our plan began with defining clear objectives that outlined the purpose and benefits of defending learning, while then helping students choose artifacts from their educational journey to log as moments.
Through the PLCs fostering student ownership of learning and creating environments where students feel comfortable defending their ideas and engaging in open dialogue. We established consistent methods for students to log moments of learning where they had to reflect on them and provide evidence to support. Collaboration and feedback loops were established between students and advisory mentors helping student improvement and adjust as we went along in the process. By fostering a culture of accountability and reflection, our plan helped to make defenses feel like a natural part of the learning process.
From Freshman to Senior year, students will complete four checkpoints by presenting evidence that they have developed competency of the STEAM Habits. The Year 2 Defense serves as a gateway into the Dual Credit and Internship Pathway. Successful completion of all four checkpoints will earn the student the prestigious honor 'Graduate of Distinction.'
These are the instructional tools that have proliferated through STEAM's dedication to deeper learning since its inception. More tools and categories may be added over time as our teachers grow, and new instructional tools become available. These tools are powerful in that they have the capacity to teach students basic content and skills while also asking them to grow a set of employability skills needed for success in the modern workforce.
