Music opens doors to a whole range of professions, including the music industry. The breadth of study, coupled with the level of commitment needed to perform at a high level, shows future employers that you are dedicated, possess analytical skills, and have the ability to work with others towards a common goal.
You will divide your time between studying musical set works from a wide variety of genres, learning compositional techniques in order to further your own compositional skills, and continuing to work on developing your own performing skills, both as a soloist and in a group. You will expand your knowledge of theory, and your appreciation of music in a historical context. You will be working in a small group, which enables lessons to be structured to bring out the best in your personal musical talents.
It is possible to take an AS Level examination. This can stand alone or count towards an A Level.
All students sit the same written paper, but there is a great deal of choice in both the performing and compositional strands.
You will be supported throughout the course by not only your academic teacher, but your instrumental or vocal teacher, who will work together to ensure the best possible outcome for you.
You will have many opportunities to perform throughout the 2-year course, which will build up your confidence as a performer.
There will be opportunities to extend your knowledge by attending concerts, workshops and meeting representatives from the various music professions.
The A Level will be assessed by means of:
a recital lasting 8—12 minutes
one original composition and one brief, assessing a choice of compositional techniques
a written paper incorporating listening tests and essays on the set works and wider musical knowledge.
The Exam Board is Edexcel.
