The Extended Project Qualification is a standalone AS Level designed to extend and develop your skills in independent research and project management. The EPQ allows you to extend your abilities beyond the A Level syllabus and prepare for university and your future career. An increasing number of universities are including the EPQ in their offers to students.
You will be taught basic research skills including time-management, risk assessment, questionnaires and referencing. You will then have to research your chosen area using suitable books, articles, academic journals and the internet to produce an artefact or a dissertation-style essay.
The EPQ gives you the chance to take complete control of your work; you can study a new area or develop ideas you have touched on before.
You will have complete control of the direction of your project.
You must be self-motivated, organised and confident.
You will develop and improve your own learning and performance as a critical, reflective and independent learner.
You will develop and apply decision-making and problem-solving skills.
You will extend your planning, research, critical thinking, analysis, synthesis, evaluation and presentation
skills.
You will demonstrate initiative and enterprise and will use your learning to support your aspirations for higher education and career development.
You will have a focus for your UCAS Personal Statement and a positive theme for any possible interviews.
The EPQ gives you the opportunity to study a subject or area not usually available at A Level.
The choice of subject is limitless!
Although your ‘product’ (artefact or essay) is the focus of your project, you will be assessed on your paperwork which charts your journey through the process. You will also have to present your ideas to a non-specialised audience.
