Religion, Philosophy & Ethics

Religion, Philosophy and Ethics encompasses the study of who we are, what we believe, and how that impacts on how we act in the world around us. It gives students space to explore their own cultural viewpoint, shared customs and traditions and those of others in our increasingly dynamic global society. It builds on the philosophical and ethical issues discussed in Years 7 & 8, underpinned by an understanding of Christianity, as well as other worldviews including world faiths and non-religious views including Humanism and atheism. Taking place over two lessons per fortnight, if you enjoy contemplating the answer to life, the universe and everything, are curious about the people in the world around you, and enjoy debating controversial and current issues, then you will gain much from this subject!

What is meant by deism, theism and atheism?
Does the existence of evil and suffering challenge the existence of God?
How do pagan understandings compare with Christian beliefs about God
What do religious experiences tell us about ‘god’?

Crime and Punishment

What do we mean by crime and punishment?
What do religions say about the causes of crime?
How do religious and non-religious arguments about punishment compare?
What do we mean by Human Rights?
Should the death penalty be reinstated

Middle East - cross curricular project with History and Geography

What is the diversity of faiths in the Middle East?
What shared cultures and practices do these faiths have?
How can faiths work together for peace and reconciliation?

How will I be assessed?

There is a range of types of assessment within this course:

Short knowledge-based questions to assess key ideas and vocabulary and Sources of Wisdom and Authority
1 essay-based question per topic to develop skills of critical analysis and evaluation
Oracy focus: debates on religious experience and court case on the death penalty
Summer Exam - range of short and longer questions
