Mathematics
Mathematics is taught in nine lessons per fortnight. The basic work from Year 7 is consolidated and new topics which build on the existing work are introduced. The pupils gain confidence as they are using familiar ideas and extending their knowledge from previous years. The students in Year 8 are set according to ability, and their progress will be closely tracked in order to ensure that the pupils are in the right group for them. Students are encouraged to reflect on their own progress and understanding, using topic assessment grids to guide them. Half termly assessments are used to build students’ familiarity and confidence with exams. Our most able students are encouraged to develop their Mathematical thinking by having a go at our ‘Challenge of the week’, and we also run a weekly ‘Maths Challenge’ club.
