When you choose appropriate tunes/harmonic forms, you support students musicians' achievement, self-assessment, self-efficacy, and motivation through:

• Presenting optimal challenge (tunes that are challenging enough to interest students and promote growth, but achievable enough so as not to discourage them)

• Choosing authentic tasks, or "real" tunes (actual tunes from the jazz canon)
