Background

Various presidents of the United States in the early 19th century expanded our country’s lands and territories.

With land deals such as the Louisiana Purchase (1803) and the Texas Annexation (1845), new lands were continually opened up for American settlers to inhabit.

Unfortunately, the settlement of these lands often forced Native peoples to move elsewhere, often by governmental force.

Some Americans, like U.S. Congressman Davy Crockett, disagreed with these laws.
