“If it wasn't for the mist we could see your home across the bay,” said Gatsby. “You always have a green light that burns all night at the end of your dock" (Page 72).

"...he stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way, and far as I was from him I could have sworn he was trembling. Involuntarily I glanced seaward--and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock. When I looked once more for Gatsby he had vanished, and I was alone again in the unquiet darkness" (Page 19).

"Daisy put her arm through his abruptly but he seemed absorbed in what he had just said. Possibly it had occurred to him that the colossal significance of that light had now vanished forever. Compared to the great distance that had separated him from Daisy it had seemed very near to her, almost touching her. It had seemed as close as a star to the moon. Now it was again a green light on a dock. His count of enchanted objects had diminished by one" (Page 72).

Steppingstone Park

Dissatisfied that there is no actual Gatsby Home in the West Egg, I wanted to find where Gatsby's house would have been physically located if the novel were not fictional. Initially, I had no idea where that would be, and I certainly could not trespass on a private residence. It turns out that Steppingstone Park in the Village of Great Neck is across Manhasset Bay. It is not exactly across the Sands Point Hempstead House, but it has a view of City Island Queens. The park has a view of a historical lighthouse in the Long Island Sound. https://www.greatneckhistorical.org/stepping-stones-lighthouse-1.html More importantly, it has a functioning pier, albeit it was locked up. It is the only public pier I could identify in the West Egg. Honestly, while the neighborhood was very nice, none of the homes in Great Neck were actually spectacular mansions. The neighborhood very much resembles Fairfield, CT. This is further evidence that the concept West Egg and its "new money" was very much a figment of Fitzgerald's imagination.
