"Over the great bridge, with the sunlight through the girders making a constant flicker upon the moving cars, with the city rising up across the river in white heaps and sugar lumps all built with a wish out of non-olfactory money. The city seen from the Queensboro Bridge is always the city seen for the first time, in its first wild promise of all the mystery and beauty in the world" (Page 54).

"Anything can happen now that we’ve slid over this bridge,’ I thought; ‘anything at all….’ Even Gatsby could happen, without any particular wonder" (Page 54).

I cross the Upper Level of the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge to experience the drive that Tom and Daisy Buchanan, Nick Carraway, and Jay Gatsby took in their drive to the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan. Driving over the Queensboro Bridge was an experience, and I saw the view of Manhattan which Tom and Daisy Buchanan, Jay Gatsby and Jordan Baker would have seen.

When driving over the bridge in a convertible, one gets the sensation of fun, but that something is not quite right. Traffic is usually heavy over this bridge crossing because it is toll free. The bridge said to be in dire need of repair, and the upper roadway is only accessible on weekends, and only for one lane of traffic in each direction. Traffic on the bridge is supposed to be full of crashes and conflicts, with its narrow bumpy lanes, curvy entrances and some potholes. New York City is undertaking a three year construction project to replace the Queensboro Bridge's entire upper deck to extend its life span for another 75 years. One tends to worry about the risks of crossing this old bridge.

Queensboro Bridge

The Queensboro Bridge is a steel cantilever bridge over the East River in New York City. It connects the neighborhood of Long Island City to the Upper East Side of Manhattan on East 59th Street and Second Avenue. In fact, the Plaza Hotel is also on 59th Street on Fifth Avenue. Northern Boulevard is the street that goes directly from Great Neck, where the West Egg is supposed to be, to the Queensboro Bridge. In 2011, the bridge was renamed the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge in honor of the late former Mayor of New York City.
