Welcome to our Broad General Education Assessment Guide. The purpose of the information on this site is to provide an overview of how a young person is assessed across their learning journey through S1 to S3.
What is assessment?
Assessment is used to help staff members, young people and families have a better awareness of what children and young people know, understand and are able to do.
The information gathered through an assessment is used for tracking progress, planning next steps, reporting and involving young people and families in the learning journey.
What is assessment for?
Assessment supports learning. It helps teachers, learners, parents and others to understand where are a young person is in their learner journey so that progress and next steps can be discussed and planned.
How are learners assessed?
A child's learning is not solely assessed on 'tests'. Learning can occur in a number of ways, both in and out with the classroom, and this can be assessed in a number of ways too.
We assess progress through a "Say, Make, Write, Do" framework that combines communication, creation, written work, and practical application.
Evidence of a young person's progress and achievements is generated through their day to day learning, and through the things they write, say, make or do. For example, evidence may be produced through young people taking part in a presentation, discussion, performance or practical investigation. Evidence can also be a drawing, report, or piece of art work that they have produced.
We aim to ensure that young people experience a variety of assessment approaches across all of their subject areas to ensure they have the best opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge, skills and understanding.
