Passport & Visa Information
US citizens do not require a visa or passport for travel within the US. They are required to travel with a valid government issued photo ID.
International travel requires a passport (for Non U.S. Passport Holders)
If you don't have a passport with at least 6 months validity, apply ASAP. Check current US Passport processing times here Do not wait to apply/renew!
For questions about obtaining or renewing your passport (US citizens) you can visit The US Department of State.
It is your responsibility to verify and complete any additional requirements you might need for travel to your program country based on your passport issuing country (i.e. visas, invitations letters, residency cards/permits). Please contact your local Consulate or Embassy for further assistance and information on entry requirements for your passport. Should you require additional forms or further assistance, please contact us.
If you are participating on multiple programs, please make sure you are verifying and completing any additional requirements needed to enter all program countries. You should especially look into vaccination requirements, as you will be traveling to/from several locations.
Our staff will always support each and every student the same as a parent would in any situation. However, some parents take additional comfort in keeping their own passport valid during their child's international travels in the unlikely event that they would feel the need to travel in an emergency situation.
If you already hold a passport:
Your passport should be valid for at least 6 months past your scheduled return date.
It is also important that you have at least one completely blank page (with no stamps or visas) in your passport. This is a requirement for entry into many countries. If your passport is nearly full it's a good idea to apply for additional pages.
If you do not hold a passport:

Make several photocopies of your passport.
Leave a copy at home with your family.
Keep a copy in each piece of luggage you take with you.
Carry a copy with you at all times when you are overseas for identification purposes.
Once you arrive in-country, all passports will be locked up during the program. If you lose your passport, immediately notify the GLA staff and we will help you replace it. If you lose your passport, having a copy will speed up the process of replacing it.
