Principles of DNA profiling and its uses
Pre-session preparation
There is no specific preparatory material for this session.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this session you should:
Understand the process by which the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) amplifies DNA
Gain hands-on experience of running a PCR machine
Gain hands-on experience of running a DNA gel
Gain hands on experience of setting up a sample slide and viewing samples under a light microscope.
Activities
You will initially brainstorm what you know about the structure of DNA and DNA replication
You will then follow instructions in the workbook provided to you to complete a PCR reaction and view your cheek cells under a light microscope.
Finally you will follow instructions from your tutor to load your PCR product on a DNA electrophoresis machine.
