If fire is a symbol of power, then it is evident that Piggy's glasses represent a means to obtain power. The glasses are the boys only way to create the fire they need: fire for a smoke signal, fire to cook with, and fire to destroy. We see the importance of the glasses as a symbol of power in my instances in the novel. The glasses are ripped from Piggy's face against his will to start the first fire, and the situations only escalate from there. The glasses are fought over again and again, with one side of the spectacles being cracked at one point. A showdown even occurs between Ralph's group and Jack's group, as Jack's group is trying to steal the glasses, which results in a fistfight in the night and piggy unable to see after being robbed. All of these instances demonstrate how the glasses were a key item to get the power and the technology that could be gained from fire, and are an important symbol in the novel.
