The littluns are the youngest boys on the island, aged from around 6-8 years old, and most of them remain unnamed. This group of mainly innocent children do not do much to help out on the island. Most of their days are spent swimming, playing, eating fruit, and following the other boys around.
This group of boys are the first ones to spark fear in the group. They mention seeing a "beast" somewhere on the island and have nightmares about it, which puts everyone on edge. Other than being terrified of the "beastie," these boys mostly follow Jack and lead after him and his savagery. These littluns basically serve as props, mainly to Jack, and they help Jack overrule Ralph. One of the littluns is even used as a "pig" when Jack and the boys reenact the hunting scene.
Instead of helping Ralph, Piggy and Simon create shelters and enforce the civilized nature of man, the littluns chose to follow Jack. The littluns are not extremely important, however, they do help portray the theme of the loss of innocence and show that there is darkness in everyone.
