Jack enters the forest with a "spear," which was really just a sharpened stick. He's on the hunt for a pig, but it ends up being unsuccessful. Irritated by his failure, Jack walks to the beach to find Ralph and Simon building shelters. Ralph is mad too, as Simon is the only one helping with the shelters. At their meeting, the other boys said they would help Ralph with the shelters, but are instead playing, eating, and bathing.
Jack and Ralph argue, as Ralph complains about how Jack and his hunters have been hunting instead of building shelters and doing useful work. Although they have been hunting, Ralph emphasizes that they have not had one successful kill, but Jack argues that the boys want meat and have a need to hunt. Jack continues on, assuring Ralph that their success is yet to come. Ralph also talks about his concerns with the littluns, as they are terrified of this beast-like creature that seems to exist. This scene clearly emphasizes how Ralph and Jack have significantly different priorities from the beginning.
Jack and Ralph head down to the beach, however, Simon ventures off into the jungle with the littluns trailing behind. On their journey, Simon helps out the littluns by grabbing fruit from a tall tree and giving it to them. Simon continues on in the jungle and reaches somewhat of a hiding area with fading sunlight and crawls in. As darkness approaches, Simon relaxes, enjoying and admiring the nature that surrounds him.
