POLICY FOR SUICIDAL IDEATION RESPONSE:
Whenever a staff member suspects or has knowledge of a student's suicidal intentions or intent to harm others, he/she shall promptly notify the principal or school-based mental health professionals (school counselor, social worker, psychologist).
When a suicide attempt or threat is reported, and the principal or designee, upon initial investigation, believes a suicide/threat assessment is warranted he/she shall:
Promptly call the school-based mental health professional that is on-site at the time of the incident (ie. if it is a day that your school psychologist is on-site you call them if it is a day that your school counselor/social worker is there you call them).
Please note that counseling interns are trainees and are not authorized to conduct suicide/threat assessments without their supervisor. They can assist school-based mental health staff but should not be the designee to conduct assessments.
If the incident occurs at a time when you do not have a school-based mental health professional on-site please call the Student Services office so we may dispatch an available staff member to your site.
562-907-5931 office
If unable to reach anyone through the Student Services office you can text or call the Director of Student Services:
562-360-0813 cell
Ensure the student's physical safety and keep the student under continuous adult supervision until the school-based mental health professional has arrived and has the opportunity to intervene
One administrator should remain with school-based mental health professionals until an assessment is completed and when necessary, until local law enforcement or Psychiatric Mobile Response Team (PMRT) has completed their assessment and response.
Document the incident in writing as soon as possible and keep in your personal file.
Follow up with the parent/guardian and student in a timely manner to provide referrals to appropriate services as needed and to create a safety plan and when applicable a re-entry from hospitalization plan for the student.
Student IDs must now have hotline numbers for both suicide prevention and domestic violence resources so students with IDs will have that information readily available
EWCSD Teachers with EWCSD Accounts will be able to access the "Say Something: Prevent Suicide Educator Handbook below" If you are unable to access this document, you can always sign up for resources yourself at the Sandy Hook Promise Website. Next to it, you will find the brief training we conducted on 4-11-22 for your reference. You can also email tcronin@ewcsd.org if you need direct access.
