Canvas is the district-supported Learning Management System for middle and high school classrooms (grades 6-12).
So, what exactly is Canvas?
Canvas is a helpful online platform that organizes all your classroom materials in one spot. Think of it as your digital backpack where you can turn in assignments, get feedback from teachers, and keep track of important due dates with the calendar feature.
Here's what you can do in Canvas:
Resources and Assignments: Easily provide access to class resources, assignments, and review students' submitted work — all in one place.
Classwork and Progress: Parents and students can check assignment grades and see how students are doing in each class. It's a great way to stay updated on progress!
Note: Final grades are still reported in Skyward Family Access. Canvas may show daily practice work while Skyward includes tests and overall grades.
Connecting with Families: Teachers can send messages, provide assignment feedback, and give due date reminders to students and their families within Canvas. See the button below to access our EPS Canvas Family Site. That site link )https://www.evergreenps.org/families/canvas-for-eps-families) can be shared with families as well.
To access: Login through ClassLink in the Evergreen bookmarks folder.
Canvas makes school life more organized and helps everyone stay connected!
Setting Up a New Course in Canvas | Resources to start a new school year or term
One of the benefits of Canvas is that once content has been created within Canvas, it can be copied to subsequent courses, year after year, with just a few clicks. This will save time and make organizing course content more efficient.
Preparing for the Next Term:
Import Content: You can bring over content from previous courses into your new Canvas course. This makes setup easy and efficient.
Publish Courses: Remember to click ‘Publish’ so your new courses are visible to students.
End of Term Access: Canvas courses will automatically conclude at the end of each term. Students will still have access to their courses for one week after the term ends.
Teacher Access: Teachers can continue to view their courses even after they conclude by clicking on the ‘Courses’ tab in the Global Navigation menu.
Important Reminders When Setting Up the Course:
Why Customize? Your Home Page is the first thing students see when they enter your course. Each building has its own unique homepages and images that match school colors and mascots. You can also add your personal touch to these homepages to make them special for each of your courses.
How to Customize:
Feel free to personalize your course homepages with additional images and visuals. Link for editable banners.
Include important information about your course to help students stay informed and engaged.
Trainer Tip: Adding visuals not only makes your Home Page look great but also helps to engage your students right from the start!
For detailed instructions, see pages 3-6 in the Start Up Tutorial.
Tip #2: Copying Course Content from Previous Courses
To copy homepages, modules, and other resources from previous Canvas courses or from PLC colleagues, follow these steps:
Go to Settings: In your new course, navigate to the 'Settings' tab.
Import Course Content: Click on 'Import Course Content.'
Copy a Canvas Course: Choose 'Copy a Canvas Course.'
Select Content: You can either select the entire course or pick specific pages, modules, and assignments you want to import.
Exclude Due Dates: Make sure to uncheck the box for due dates so that assignments are copied without last year's dates.
For a visual guide, see the screenshots provided here.
Organize Your Content:
Purpose: Make it easy for students and families to access course materials.
How: Preload content and schedule it to automatically publish when needed.
Steps:
Add Modules: Create modules to organize your units of study and resources.
Add Assignments: Within each module, add assignments for students to complete.
Resource Links: Include links to important resources for extra help or further reading.
By organizing your content ahead of time, you make learning smoother for everyone!
Tip #4: Use Accessibility Tools within Canvas to support students' access to content
Immersive Reader Features:
Translate text, have the page read aloud in over 60 languages, line reading, word highlighting, parts of speech, and more.
Supporting Student Access:
Canvas Accessibility Tools: Immersive Reader, Accessibility Checker, Speech to Text, and Keyboard shortcuts.
OSPI’s Accessibility Tools: These tools should be made available during instruction and assessment. Many Canvas tools support Embedded Tools for all students.
Using Annotation Tools:
Submission Type: Select ‘Online - Student Annotation’ as the assignment submission type. See this video tutorial.
How It Works: This allows teachers to upload a file that students can mark up using built-in annotation tools (highlight, make comments, draw marks, etc.)—all within Canvas. It's similar to Kami’s features.
Student View: See how students use the ‘Student Annotation Submission’ here.
Note: The free version of Kami will also still work with Canvas for annotation tools.
Additional Resources:
