"Artificial Intelligence (AI) is here to stay. As this new technology continues to evolve, educators must prepare students to understand and use these tools. In Washington state, educators are already integrating AI-assisted technologies in schools and empowering students to do the same. The state's responsibility is to provide students, educators, and school district administrators with the resources and tools they need to understand how to use these technologies effectively, ethically, and safely.
The rapid development of AI tools has created opportunities for educators to rethink the way they approach student learning. As our state embraces these changes, it is important to remember that human reflection and understanding are key to AI generation. This "Human-AI-Human" approach to AI puts our students and educators at the beginning and end of all interactions with AI."

AI Guidance Version Three *Released July 1, 2024*
The third version of the Comprehensive Human-Centered AI Guidance for K–12 Public Schools provides a guide for ethical considerations for AI and responsible use in the classroom. The Accessible Format of the Comprehensive Guidance is a user-friendly document that is available for download.
Using AI in the Classroom
Many of our existing programs and learning platforms have AI tools built-in for student and teacher use. There are also numerous new resources being published and created daily. When using AI tools in class, FERPA requires the software, website, or tool to be approved through the District Software Approval Process.
Completing this approval process first ensures that the privacy policy of each tool is reviewed and that confidential data and student information are protected.
Once approved, teachers can utilize the AI tools in class to support access to the adopted Curriculum and materials. AI may not supplant curricular resources. Refer to the Curriculum and Instruction website for adopted resources (located within the Evergreen Bookmarks folder).
Also, review the recently Adopted School Board Policies for Classroom Protocol for using AI, Student Agreement, and Instruction for getting started with AI. Links to FAQs and Definitions of AI Terminology are available on the OSPI Website.

AI Tools and Features
As part of our new security web filter and device monitoring platform (Securly Classroom), we have access to AI Chat. With conversation features similar to Language Models such as Chat GPT and Bard, AI Chat also provides a safe digital platform for students to interact with AI tools connected to our district web filter that also allows teachers to have more control over how AI is being used for increasing critical thinking and engaging students in the classroom.
With AI Chat, you can:
Monitor student usage of AI to maintain academic integrity
Guide students in the responsible and ethical use of AI Get teachers comfortable with AI technology
Customize interactions and content to support educational goals
Teach students digital citizenship
Ensure student data privacy is maintained

Teach students responsible and ethical AI use
AI Chat for Securly Filter is a conversational AI designed specifically for K-12 student use. With AI Chat, schools can teach students how to use generative AI, while maintaining visibility and control over how students are interacting with it.
Like similar AI tools, students engage with AI Chat in a conversational way. They can ask questions, ranging from simple queries to more detailed research inquiries on any subject. AI Chat uses state-of-the-art conversational AI to comprehend and respond. Unlike other AI tools, however, AI Chat is designed specifically for the needs and concerns of K-12 schools.

EPS School Board Policy (adopted June 2024)
Policy No. 2023
Digital Citizenship and Media Literacy
Purpose
In recognition of the fact that students use technology to play, learn, and communicate while at home and at school, it is important that they learn how to use that technology responsibly. The District is committed to educating every student on how to use technology in ways that augment their learning experience, leading to analysis, evaluation, reflection, and enhanced skills of expression. As the District’s educators guide exploration of the digital landscape, they will encourage students to be critical and creative thinkers. Students, in turn, are expected to actively engage with and express their voices in the digital landscape.
