Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Does it cost any money to join Band or Choir?
A: Nope! Joining the music program is free to all students. However, we do encourage families to purchase their own instruments and supplies. If a family is unable to provide an instrument, there are instruments available that can be borrowed from the school. It is important to note that if a student is using a school instrument and it becomes damaged, the student is responsible to pay for the cost of repair.
Q: I don't know how to play an instrument or sing. Can I still join Band or Choir?
A: YES! Anyone can join the beginning band or choir, no experience necessary! You will be taught everything you need to know during class and will be making music in no time!
Q: How often do we have class?
A: At the middle school level, students have band and choir classes every day. At Rincon Middle School, Band and Choir are year-long electives, so students will attend every day for the entire year.
Q: What supplies do I need for my instrument?
A: All supplies that are needed are outlined in the band and choir handbooks. Students playing instruments are encouraged to provide their own supplies. Students playing the oboe/clarinet/saxophone are expected to purchase their own reeds. A student who is practicing like they are supposed to will go through one reed in 1-2 weeks. After that it needs to be replaced.
Q: Where can I go to rent or purchase an instrument? Can I get an instrument from Amazon?
A: We encourage all families to purchase instruments from a reputable music store. There are a handful of music stores in North County that offer good quality instruments that will last many years. A list of music stores can be found in the back of the Band and Choir Handbook.
Please, DO NOT purchase instruments from Amazon, Walmart, or Ebay. Most of these inexpensive instruments will last less than a year, and usually the cost of repair is more than the instrument is worth. It is much more cost effective to rent a good quality instrument. Many local music stores offer low prices for EUSD families, some as low as $15 a month. A lot of times, the rent you pay can be applied towards purchasing the instrument at the end of the contract.
Q: Do I need to attend all of the performances?
A: Yes. This is a performance based class, meaning that the grade you earn is based on how well you perform. If you do not attend the performances, your grade will be significantly lowered. In the event that there is a scheduling conflict, an alternate assignment will be assigned.
Q: How often do I have to practice?
A: We ask that students practice for AT LEAST 20 minutes a day during the school week. At the middle school level, students really should be practicing for 30-45 minutes a day, but we understand that sometimes that isn't possible. However, students are graded on how often they practice and if they know their music or not. Think of practicing as studying for a test, except the test is a performance in front of your friends and family! You want to make sure you do your best!
Q: What happens if I don't like band or choir? Can I quit?
A: While we understand that sometimes a student will try a new activity and not like it, students are expected to stay in band and choir for the entire year. If a student wants to be removed from Band or Choir, they would require and entire schedule change. If you want to drop out of band or choir, you could need to talk to the Administration.
