Mrs. Wersky has been a credentialed music teacher in the Sacramento Region Capitol Section for 34 years. This is her 30th year teaching elementary and junior high band, choir, and jazz band in the Eureka Union School District in Granite Bay/Roseville.
She earned her BM in Flute Performance and BA in Voice from CSU Sacramento and her Masters in Education from Lesley College. While flute is her primary instrument, she has also frequently performed as a percussionist with the Sierra Nevada Wind Ensemble over the past 16 years. Elaine Wersky is an active member of the California Music Educators Association and California Band Directors Association. Over the years, she has served on the Capitol Section Board as the Collegiate Rep, Secretary, and most recently, the Middle School Band Rep for the Capitol Section Middle School Honor Band from 2013-2016. Mrs. Wersky has directed several regional honor bands, including the All Northern Junior High Honor Band, and was involved, first as a teacher for 20 years and then another 10 years as the Director of Music at Donner Mine Music from 1990-2019, a camp that remains very dear to her heart today. Mrs. Wersky was honored as the CMEA Capitol Section Music Educator of the year in 2020.
My husband Don (a retired band director) and I have been happily married for 35 years. We have two grown sons and their partners in our lives (Mitch married Jules in June 2020 and Cole is engaged to Alyssa). We have a 15 year old cat named Bonsai and an amazing 7 year old dog named Misa. Our dog is completely indulged and adored. I'm an animal lover in general. In addition to my love for music and teaching, I am passionate about fitness, gardening on my acre that I have designed and nurtured for over 25 years, and adventuring in the outdoors (running, biking, backpacking, swimming, camping, etc). I am an avid collector of heart rocks (well, lots of rocks, really) and enjoy creating repurposed garden art. I love the mountains and the ocean and escape to them often with my husband in our Sprinter van that we converted over these past two years. For 7 years, I have been a co-leader of SHALL WE TRAVEL with Ms. Shaw . We have been taking students to South America and recently Asia for service and travel. As such, I started studying Spanish about 7 years ago and love the opportunity to practice what I am learning (so if you know Spanish, please give me a chance to practice with you!) I take my role as a music educator seriously, but I don’t take myself too seriously. I’m silly, sometimes awkward, colorfully dressed and accessorized, and a bit of an Energizer bunny. I talk too fast even though I try not to. I take joy in small victories and small kindnesses. I care about being kind to others. I care about my students. I celebrate diversity and honor people living their personal truth. If you have concerns, I am a person who would like to talk through them to see if we can make things better. So if you’ve read this, you now know more about me as a teacher and a human being. I hope to know your child as a student and a human being as well. Thank you for the opportunity to share music with your family.
A music education is a personal journey of self-discovery, skill mastery, social connection & teamwork, self-expression, personal achievement, individual investment, and creative expression. Music acquisition comes from whole brain learning and as such, music study shows scientific connections with all academic learning. To say it succinctly, music is good for the brain and good for the soul. I hope to inspire students to make connections in music-making for a lifetime, no matter what they pursue for a living. As with all skill development, mastery is earned step by step through time invested with consistent practice and self-discipline and much patience over an extended amount of time. I would love to see all of our kids explore playing a musical instrument and singing to see if it sparks their passions. But I would also encourage patience in the process! As with most journeys in life, their will be peaks and valleys, unexpected surprises, moments that challenge us and hopefully even more that inspire us to drive around the next bend to see what's next.
