EXCELSIOR BAND SUPPLIES: Visit a local music store (listed below) to secure your instrument and supplies. •Please do not EVER buy instruments from non-music stores (Walmart, Costco, etc.) These instruments seem more affordable, but they do not hold up, often have craftmanship and pitch issues, and are typically unrepairable. (One exception: the P-Bone) Music stores will set you up with a quality brand.
1.Instrument (with name and classroom visible on case so your instrument can get back to you if you leave it somewhere).
2.Method Book: Sound Innovations Book 1 for your child's instrument (Name and classroom on front cover). Purchased at the music store. It is also part of Makemusic online, but the hardcopy will be needed in class.
3. 3-Ring Binder w/ Name, Hm, Paper & Pencils.
4. When given sheet music, it should be hole-punched and attached in binder ALWAYS.
5. Appropriate cleaning/playing supplies for your instrument:
Flutes: cleaning rod & swab
Clarinets and Saxes: cap, cleaning swab & reeds (start with four size 2 or 2.5 reeds (indicates the hardness) (saxes need a strap) Rico Royale or better (I don't recommend Rico reeds, as they don't hold up as well)
Trumpets/French Horns: valve oil and slide oil, mouthpiece brush & soft cloth for cleaning
Trombones: slide grease, mouthpiece brush, snake/cleaning rod, small water bottle & soft cloth for cleaning
Baritones: valve oil & slide oil, mouthpiece brush & soft cloth for cleaning
Tuba: valve oil and slide oil, mouthpiece brush & soft cloth for cleaning
Percussion: snare sticks and mallets (usually come with the bell kit you rent)
6. MAKEMUSIC SUBSCRIPTION* (Optional but HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!) This is a resource for guided practice and playing that I will be using to support home learning and assessment from home. And it's an amazing resource! (More details in October. Or go to makemusic.com and preview)
