Spanish Language & Culture

Hablas espanol?

EUSD believes in the power of bilingualism (or multilingualism)! Hence, EUSD board has approved a plan to ensure students have access to Spanish Language and Culture Classes from TK-8th grade. The goal is to produce 8th graders who are ready and motivated to take higher level Spanish classes in high school and earn the Seal of Biliteracy!

The Spanish Bilingualism Pathway starts at Maidu Elementary School where all students attend Spanish L and C twice a week with Senora Acosta. These classes are based on a Spanish Context-Based Immersion Model, where students learn about science, history, the arts, and other disciplines in Spanish! For example, if science students are learning about the water cycle, Senora Acosta will build upon that knowledge in her Spanish Class!

Questions and Answers:

  1. What if my child does not attend Maidu Elementary School? Unfortunately, at this point, only Maidu Elementary School is offering Spanish Content-Based Immersion.

  2. My child are attending Ridgeview, can we participate in the Spanish Classes at Excelsior Elementary? At this point, we only have the program being piloted at Excelsior. This is a pilot. If more parents express interest, we will explore offering Zero-Period Spanish at Ridgeview.

  3. Are these classes free? Yes! These are classes that are offered for free, and the curriculum vertically aligns. If a student follows the pathway shown above, s/he will not have a year without learning Spanish. We do advise continuing Spanish Language classes during the summer.

  4. What time is the Spanish Class at Excelsior? The class starts at 8:00 am and ends at 8:50 am. Classes meet twice a week, M and W or T and Th.

  5. Can we still participate in the ESF World Language Program? Yes! ESF continues to offer before and after school programs for a fee.
