Inflation - Penny candy going for $2.50 a bag and gas costing way more than a dollar are examples of inflation, which is when the general price level goes up over time. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (part of the federal government) calculate the rate of inflation every month. Its website has an inflation calculator that you can use to see how much a $10 movie ticket would have been in an earlier year. The calculator is at https://data.bls.gov/cgi-bin/cpicalc.pl Choose five things you commonly buy and note the current price of that item. Then use the BLS calculator to see how much it would have cost 25 years ago, 50 years ago, and 100 years ago.
