1. The Low Cuts all have their hair cut short, almost bald, as a sign of solidarity. What does this sign signify? Why did they choose this sign?

2. "Only take loose change." "Only from the top, never from the drawers." The Low Cuts have a lot of rules about stealing. Why do you think that is? Isn't stealing just stealing?

3. Was the end of the chapter a surprise for you? What emotions did it stir up in you? Did it change your impression of the Low Cuts?

Activity:

Sickle Cell Anemia - Jasmine has sickle cell anemia. Have students research to find out more about this disease. What are the symptoms, treatment, cause, and prognosis? How do doctors test for it? Students can make an informational poster, pamphlet, or public service announcement about the disease.
