Do Now: Copy down terms a def's. Take out your notebook and get your ironweed seed container and bring it to your desk.
Apoplastic - movement occurs outside of the cells (between the cells)
Symplastic - moves from cell to cell (through the cells)
Casparian strip - a band around the outside of the innermost layer of cortex cells
Cotyledon - seed leaf within the embyo of a seed
Pericycle - a layer of cells that surround the stele where secondary roots arise
Stele - the central part of the root that includes vascular tissue, in some cases pith, and the pericycle (which defines the outermost boundary of the stele)
Suberin - a waxy substance (biopolymer composed of long chain fatty acids and glycerol)
Mucigel - a slimy, viscous substance secreted by the roots of plants that lubricates the tips of roots as they push their way through the soil during growth
Next: Plant 2-3 seeds in each cell of row two. Create another chart in your notebook for row two and document the planting date.
Then: Slideshow and notes on plant roots
Last: Observe root slides under microscope and document observations in your notebook
Exit Ticket: Name an example of adventitious roots
Monday, December 4, 2023
Do Now: Check on your houseplant and your ironweed seeds. Document germination observations in your notebook. Give water to your plants if needed.
Next: Copy down terms and definitions.
Primary meristem - where length of root occurs
Secondary meristem - where width of root occurs
Mycorrhizae - fungi that have a symbiotic relationship with the roots of many plants
Then: Slideshow and notes on plant roots
Exit Ticket: Name a root modification
Tuesday, December 5, 2023
Do Now: Take out your notebook and copy terms and def.'s
Meristematic Cells - undifferentiated stem cells that divide indefinitely
Next: Finish slideshow and notes on roots
Then: Group activity
Exit Ticket: Something memorable from another groups mini-lesson
Thursday, December 7, 2023
Do Now: Get into your groups from Tuesday and finish answering your assigned questions and preparing your mini lesson for the class.
Next: Groups share out mini-presentations
Then: Check your grade in skyward. Write down any missing assignments in your notebook. Write down a goal for how to improve your grade. What assignments will you work on first? When will you do them? You MUST share this with me AND chat with me about it before you my be excused.
Exit Ticket: Share a compliment about someone else's presentation
Monday, December 11, 2023
Do Now: Say hi to your plant and seeds. Give it water if it's dry. Document the ironweed growth status. Include measurement (in centimeters) if possible.
Next: Review new protocol for whole class documentation
Then: Enter your data:
P1 refrigerator here
P1 freezer data here
P7 refrigerator data here
P7 freezer data here
Last: roots review practice test
Exit Ticket: one thing about roots that you need to study
Tuesday, December 12, 2023
Do Now: Take out your notebook
Next: Bryophytes worksheet groups
Then: Roots flashcard review slideshow
Exit Ticket: Tell me when the test is
Thursday, December 14, 2023
Do Now: Put away your phone and your computer. Clear your desk of everything except your notes!
Next: Flashcard review slideshow (as a class)
Then: Take Unit 3-Roots test (on Google Classroom) classroom.google.com/c/NjE5NjEzOTQxNjM3/a/NjQ5MzM1OTc1MTU0/details
Last: GWT
Exit Ticket:

P1 refrigerator here
P1 freezer data here
P7 refrigerator data here
P7 freezer data here
Next: Watch the videos (as a class) that are linked in on slide 23 and then answer the questions (individually in your notebook). Then, share out your answers as a class.
Then: GWT
Exit Ticket: What are you looking forward to this weekend?
Monday, December 18, 2023
Do Now: Check skyward for your unit 3-roots test results. See me after class or send me an email if you would like to schedule a retake.
Next: Copy down terms and definitions in your notebook
Nodes: where leaves are attached
Internodes: the space between nodes
Leaf axil: the stem area just above the point where the leaf attaches
Axillary bud: the bud that grows from the leaf axil
Terminal bud: a bud located at the apex of the stem where most of the plant growth occurs
Then: Go get your ironweed seed container and bring to your table. Plant 2-3 seeds in each cell of the final row. Give them water. Make a data table for this row in your notebook. Document germination and growth of rows 1 and 2 in your notebook AND in the class spreadsheet.
Exit Ticket: Something you did last weekend
Tuesday, December 19, 2023
Do Now: Take out your notebook. Copy down terms and definitions.
