Students should first secure their belongings in their PE locker and proceed to meet with their teacher outside. Students will be given a pass when deemed necessary.
If a replacement or additional uniform item is required, students can purchase one at the equipment room (G157) during school hours or online at our ETHS school store. Chronic unauthorized cell phone use may result in school disciplinary measures.
Students in grades 9-12 will be assigned to a locker in the Gym Wing. Students will maintain the same locker for the duration of their time at ETHS. See the following information regarding locker room policies.
Students are assigned to PE locker rooms according to the student’s gender identity, as reflected in the official student record. If a student is interested in changing their locker room assignment, use the Student Advocacy Form (bit.ly/studentadvocacyform) to notify ETHS of this request.
Students can find their PE locker assignments and combinations by logging into myETHS.
Students are responsible for securing their lockers after each use by making sure the door is completely closed. These lockers have the capability of holding a backpack and a change of clothes. All other larger items, such as coats, boots, and athletic equipment should be left in the ETHS hall lockers.
Students are responsible for their personal property stored in PE locker rooms. Report lost or stolen property immediately following the steps in the “Lost & Found” section.
A locker room attendant is available to support students during the school day. Report any PE locker issues or concerns to the Locker Room Attendant within your assigned locker room.
During the swim unit, students will have access to the pool locker rooms. Students will need to bring a personal lock each day to secure their belongings. The items and lock must be removed at the end of each class period.
Sharing lockers with another student is not permitted. Do not give locker combinations to others. The student assigned to a locker will be held responsible for items stored in that locker.
All students must vacate their PE locker during the designated locker clean-out date at the end of the school year. Locker contents left after the official end of locker clean-out will be removed and may not be retrievable.
Student’s physical activity grade is determined by calculating points from the 3 categories.
Physical Activity = 10 daily points
3 R’s (Respect for self, others, and community) = 1 daily point
Cognitive Assignments = Specific to course content and teacher
Physical Activity
The main objective of physical education is for students to be physically active. Students will participate in a wide variety of physical activities as it relates to the individualized course. Physical activity expectations and lesson objectives will be clearly communicated at the start of each lesson.
Physical activity points are determined by teachers using the HR monitor rubric as the primary resource for assessment. This allows for objective and equitable grading.
When students are not using HR straps, teachers will clearly communicate the physical activity expectations required for students to receive full credit.
Points will be entered into the gradebook on a regular basis and students should check their Home Access Center (HAC) for grade confirmation.
These 10 points are solely earned based on the student's physical activity.
Cognitive
All cognitive lessons and assignments are determined based on the teacher and course content. Cognitive objectives will be clearly communicated and differentiated based on the needs of each student.
Cognitive lessons could include outside of class participation, such as homework assignments as well as in class assessments / assignments. Students will be responsible for completing all assignments and assessments.
Cognitive points are graded based on completion and accuracy of assignments.
Points will be entered into the gradebook on a regular basis and students should check their Home Access Center (HAC) for grade confirmation.
If a student is not in attendance for any reason, they are still required to complete any missed assignments/assessments.
As a reminder, ETHS late work policy allows students “twice the number of missed school days to turn in assignments for full credit.”
3 R’s (Respect Yourself, Others & Community) Character Points
Our Physical Education department supports and embraces the school wide messaging of Respect. Students will be graded weekly based on the ETHS 3 R’s of Respect (yourself, others, and the community).
‘Respect’ points are earned each contact day. One point per day. This means that students can earn up to 3 points weekly during a full school week for appropriate PE Uniform, positive attitude and sportsmanship, and following all school-wide and departmental policies.
Points will be entered into the gradebook on a regular basis and students should check their Home Access Center (HAC) for grade confirmation.
Lost Respect points can not be made up at any time. The areas of focus for this category are, but not limited to, the following.
Uniform: All students must wear the required PE uniform on a daily basis. If a student is not fully dressed they may lose 1 point for that day.
Attitude: All students should display sportsmanship, collaboration, communication and respect for themselves, peers, and staff. If the student does not display such behavior they may lose 1 point for the day.
Inappropriate use of electronic devices: All electronics should be secured in the assigned student PE locker during their PE class unless communicated and approved by the teacher for the use of instructional purposes only. Chronic/consistent misuse of this policy may result in the deduction of 1 point.
Other infractions based on the ETHS Pilot: All behavioral infractions are subject to 1 point deduction. They will also be followed up according to the ETHS Pilot policies.
Consistent loss of daily respect points may result in follow up consequences with administrative support teams.
Semester Grade Calculations
Grades will average the percentages earned each quarter. For example, Q1 78% + Q2 82% would be an 80% (B-) for the semester. The lowest percentage for a quarter grade of F will be 50% for the quarter. The highest percentage for a quarter grade of A will be 100% for the quarter.
For any class work and any homework assignments due during excused/unexcused absences, student will have twice the number of missed school days to turn in assignments for full credit. This applies to assignments, assessments, and projects with previously announced deadlines. If students need additional time, it is recommended they communicate with their assigned teacher for an extension.
For more information please see the Student Pilot Handbook on the ETHS Website.
Attendance is a key component of academic success, and students are expected to arrive to class on time and be prepared to learn. For more information about attendance policies and procedures, please see the school website here.
UNEXCUSED ABSENCES
Students are required to communicate with their teacher for any missed work.
Students will be required to make up any missed physical activity during AM Support, on a free period in PASS, or during Wildkit Academy.
Students will still be required to complete all cognitive assignments from the missed lesson.
EXCUSED ABSENCES
See the ETHS Pilot (pg 23) for approved excused absence reasons and reporting
Excused absences must have proper documentation and valid absence reporting by a parent/guardian
Students with an excused absence will not lose daily physical activity points and will not need to make them up such as:
Illness with a medical excuse (see PE Medical Exemption/Modification Policy), observation of Religious holidays, Field trips, Court appearances, College visits, IEP meetings, etc.
All Parental Absences will require the student to make up missed physical activity points
Students will be required to make up missed physical activity assessments such as fitness testing.
Students will still be required to complete all cognitive assignments from the missed lesson
If a student is unable to participate in physical activity due to medical reasons, the students should follow the procedures outlined below.
Obtain written documentation from a medical professional. The note must be signed by a health care provider stating the extent of injury or illness, specific limitations, and duration of absence.
Medical professionals must also complete the ETHS PE Medical Exemption / Modification Form
Students will bring all medical documentation to the Nurses’ Office (N121) where the medical will be processed.
The PE teacher will determine the appropriate modification for both physical activity and cognitive lessons based on medical recommendation.
Students will be required to participate in approved physical and cognitive portions of the daily lesson. Students are responsible for following the modified lessons and completing all required coursework.
During activities or lessons in which students cannot participate, they will report to the Physical Education Resource Center (PERC) in W133. See PERC policies below.
In accordance with the Illinois State Law, if a student is fasting for religious reasons, families can provide a written note to the PE teacher and/or Nurse’s Office excusing them from physical activity during that time. Students would be required to complete an alternative cognitive assignment.
