How do I get the German symbols (ä,ö,ü,ß) using a Chromebook?
Slow, tedious method: Copy and paste them as needed from this page: ä ö ü ß
BETTER method:
- Go to the bottom right corner of your screen and click on the time to access your Chromebook settings.
- Click on "Settings"
- Once the settings webpage pops up, search for "languages" to access "language and input settings"
- Once in the "language and input settings" menu, find "German" and add as a language. Make sure to click on the checkbox to add the "German Keyboard"
- Once the keyboard is added, you can switch between the American and German keyboard easily by clicking "ctrl" then "space" anytime.
- Once the German keyboard is activated, a little "DE" will appear in the bottom right corner of your screen. When the German keyboard is active, you can find the special letters by clicking the following keys:
- ä = the apostrophe (') and quotation mark (") key
- ö = the semi-colon (;) and colon (:) key
- ü = the left bracket ([{) key
- ß = hyphen (-) and underscore (_) key
I promise you get used to using the keys with practice and patience!! Ultimately this is much easier in the long run than copying and pasting all the time.
When using Microsoft Word on a normal PC: Just copy them from this page or from the symbols list provided in Word.
