OTHER NOTES:
Vary your sources: 2 paragraphs using only 1 source - eh… kinda suspicious. 3 paragraphs using only 1 source - red flag! change it up! Find another source that gives similar information so your audience knows you did thorough research. Prove that more than one person came to the same/similar conclusions or agrees on those facts.
Explain quotations and facts, connect ideas, and make transitions. You should have an opinion and voice it throughout the paper.
Go in chronological order (people with history topics: start with the oldest date and move to the future; do not jump around by topics, go in order or it will be very confusing)
Fix all sections that “don’t sound like you” or that have sentences that are identical to your sources. If you like the way the source states it, put quotations marks around it and cite it. If you use another author’s words as your own, it is called plagiarism. Some people are doing this unintentionally. If this is you, then fix it before the final draft dn you will not be penalized. If, however, you have entire pages copied from something on the internet, then you will have a problem. Entire pages do not get copied by accident.
Correct all citations and your bibliography. Please use the two handouts I gave you to ensure that you are citing correctly and that your bibliography is correct. Ask for my help if you don’t get how to fix your paper.
Second drafts were a little rough. After making all of your main changes, please read your entire paper out loud and listen for missing words, incorrect words, or confusing sentences. If you read your paper out loud, you will hear it when you typed “of” instead of “on.” Please fix all typos.
Use the last name of all historical figures, authors, celebrities, etc. No first names except for literary characters in an English essay.
Don’t forget to write down the page number for all citations from books or online sources that have pages numbers.
Common grammar issues:
Then- a time reference: “We will eat and then we wil…”, Than- a comparison: “She is taller than the boy…”
There- place: “What is that over there?” , Their- belongs to them: “That is their right to do as they please” , They’re- they are (a contraction and should not be in your paper)
Final checklist: When you have fixed everything in your paper, go through this checklist to make sure you have completed all requirements.
Formal writing: No contractions, all one word numbers spelled out, no slang
