In this lesson, we feature two innovative programs on campus: our STEAM Academy and Sewing Club. Our School-Wide Lesson students and staff hosts also introduce the role of advocates in the journey to make change.
We ask students to describe a challenge or problem that our community is facing, as well as innovative solutions for how would they would solve or address this problem. We encourage students to seek out advocates for their impact work.
One of the challenges that our students wanted to address is campus beautification. Under the masterful leadership of Ms. Susan Hinchey, the IHS Beautification program:
Successfully planted 218 plants on campus.
25 plants experienced trauma and have recuperated in the greenhouse.
14 different kinds of plants are growing or trying to grow in the greenhouse to be planted in the future.
By the numbers:
90 students participated in planning for the plants
192 students participated in preparing for or planting the plants
141 students completed 1-5 hours this year
26 students completed 6-10 hours
8 students completed 11-15 hours
11 students 16-20 hours
3 students 21-25 hours
3 students 26-30 hours
30 teachers and staff have students water existing plants
On Saturday, April 22, 2023, over 100 SIXERs joined together for Sixers Earth Day on campus. Together, students, staff, and community members beautified our campus by adding plants and other greenery, clearing areas for new plants, weeding common areas, and picking up litter to improve our campus community environment!
Under the leadership of Ms. Hinchey, Ms. Maggie, and student Kayla Tran many clubs collaborated to organize this event, including Student Governing Board, Student Equity Council, IHS Beautification, Recycling Club, Mural Club, Unicef, ARK, Greenhouse Club, and Key Club.
It was an exciting day to see so many Sixers engaged in beautifying our campus community. Sixers know that learning happens both in and out of the classroom and events like this help us connect with each other! We engage together to leave a positive impact on our environment and our school.
By working together, we can make a difference, and have a brighter future!
Thank you to students Tony Dang and Kasey Cheung for taking many of the photos used in the video.
