Artists in residence

Each edition of iMagination Week welcomes one artist in residence. This artist creates a work of art during the week in front of the students, whether it is a sculpture balancing rocks or recycled material, a mural on one of the campus walls or a stencil graffiti on stage. The creative process can take between a few hours and 3 days, depending on the technique used by the artist. This period of time allows students to interact with the artist while he/she is creating and to ask questions about the artist's inspiration, techniques, work and life.

On Friday, the artist takes the stage for a 20-minute lecture, recounting his journey and explaining the intention behind his work of art, offering another opportunity for all students to ask their questions.

Henry Blache, alias Sax, is a French Street Artist from south of France based in Paris.

His splashing animal paintings with flashy colors quickly caught peoples’ attention. His artworks brought a fresh environmental warning concerning the endangered species situation all around the world.

Born in Provence in 1995, he grew up close to nature, and takes his inspiration from the colors and the wealthiness of the landscapes he lived in.

His instinctive and spontaneous pictorial technique is based on several principles of Chinese painting style Xieyi, favoring the expressions of feelings and emotions.

By integrating graffitis to his artworks, he creates various reading levels, those create calligram effects, enhancing the idea that “each of these animal species are often left abandoned, like old buildings”.

Watercolor, ink, acrylic or aerosol painting are among the various materials he uses to enhance the intensity of the emotions of his paintings.

The spontaneity and accuracy of his work is clearly visible during the “Live Painting” he realizes for events in France and overseas.

As a complete artist, he also composes music and realize short movies. The French media Konbini called him “le maître du twist” (the twist master) for his movie “Allô”. He also won in 2016 the Jury’s Grand Prize at the BeGreen Film Festival (COP21) for his video clip Freestyle.

Ardif

Ardif is a French street artist from Paris and based in Lyon. During his studies of architecture, he is interested in the aesthetics of the building and the machine at different scales.

Today, his work explores possible hybridizations between architecture / machine and nature.

His series of “mechanimals” is the illustration of this graphic universe and is visible on the walls of the capital.

The natural symmetry of the animal allows a composition that plays on the contrast of materials, scales and textures. This urban fauna creates a contrast that questions us about the impact of the artificialisation of nature or, conversely, of the wild and primitive instinct to be found in our urban life.

Graduated as an electronic technician in 1987. It is thus quite naturally that I became a cartoonist for “Camions Magazine” in 1990.

Since that day, I never stopped producing cartoons and comic strips for large audiences, for corporations, press or books collaboration (Especially for the “Pour les Nuls” series, published by First editions – the French equivalent of “for dummies” books). My drawings have been delivered under many different formats such as postcards, cartoons, books for youth, comic strips, flip book, etc.

In the 1990s, there was a job in advertising called "Roughman". If you could draw, it was an easy way to make a good living. I started out that way, then worked my way up through the agencies until I became the creative director of a big com group (BBDO). Unfortunately, what I gained in excitement and responsibility, I lost in sense of humour. With my mid-life crisis, I decided to start all over again, from my initial skills (in more romantic terms: my first loves): drawing and humour.

Today, I've been publishing in the press for over ten years: Le Point, Ouest France, LCI, Pour L'Eco, L'Echo des Savanes, Charlie Hebdo, etc. And I regularly come to fill up on excitement during live drawings for companies.
