R1 Esports Spring Tournament - Elementary Division
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Rules



1.1 Competition Format

The tournament will have a double elimination group stage and Top 8 single elimination stage.

1.2 Match Format

Match Format: Best-of-Three ("Bo3") Sets

Set Format: Best-of-Three ("Bo3") Games

Mode: Smash

Team Size: 3 Players


1.3 Team Rosters

A "team" will consist of 3 players.  Each player will compete in one set (Bo3 games) each.  Players must be enrolled in the campus they are representing and must be a K-5th grade student.


1.4 Substitutions

There will be no player substitutions in this competition.


1.5 Roster Submission

Before each set, a team representative will submit their roster order to the facilitator.  Both teams would select their roster order without knowing the opponent's roster order.  Once submitted, the order will not change.  Teams can change the roster order prior to each match.


1.6 Player Match Up

Players will be matched up against their opponent in the order of their roster submission (1st vs. 1st, 2nd vs. 2nd, 3rd vs. 3rd).  In the group stage, all 3 sets will be played concurrently, regardless of the results.  

In the 3rd Place and Championship match, each set will be played one after the other, with the 3rd set only being played if needed.


1.7 Match Set Up

Players will use the defined ruleset for the competition (see below 2.1).  To start the set, both players will decide who will be player 1 by using one of the following methods:

Stages will be selected randomly by the game from the competition stage list (see 2.2).  Players will use the following procedures for character selection for their set.

1.9 Self-Destruct Finishes

In the event where the game ends due to a self-destruct move, the results screen will determine the winner of the game.

1.10 Sudden Death

In the event that the clock runs out and a sudden death is initiated, the player which had the highest number of stocks is the winner of the game. If both players had the same amount of stocks, the player with the lowest total damage percentage taken is the winner of the game. If both players had the same amount of stocks and the same percentage, players should follow the scenario below this one. 

In the event that both players knock out at the same time and initiate a sudden death, players will play a tiebreaker game on the same stage with the same characters using the official match format with the following modifications: 


1.11 Match Results

Each player will be competing in their own "Best-of-3 games" set.  The winner of the set will be player to win two games first.  The winning team of the match will be determined by the team to win two of the three sets.

The stages below will be used for competitions.  No stages outside this list can be played in competition.  Omega and Battlefield variations of these stages are not allowed.

2.3 Characters

All original roster and DLC fighters are allowed.  

Amiibo: All amiibo figures are prohibited from use in the competition.

Mii Fighters:  Players must use default Mii Fighter costumes and must use a Guest Mii. If a player chooses to use a Mii Fighter, they  must use the default moveset only. Any combination of moves may be used, but any Mii Fighters that a player may want to use during a match must be created before the match begins (up to a limit of three Mii Fighters) or else they will be prohibited from doing so. Using undeclared Mii Fighters or Mii Fighters that do not follow these restrictions may result in a player forfeiting the game in which the illegal Mii Fighter was used.


3. Tournament Rules

3.1 Code of Conduct

As participants in the scholastic esports community, we ask that players, coaches, advisors, and spectators uphold the values of sportsmanship, respect, and integrity. Behavior both in-game and outside of it reflects not only on yourself but on your school, district, and the broader scholastic esports community. Therefore, we ask that you commit to the following principles:

Any player, coach, or spectator deliberately acting against these principals may be removed from the competition to make the environment 

 
3.2 In-game Names

All player names and gamer tags used in play are prohibited from including:


Please review all names/gamer tags prior to playing in the tournament.  Any player with a name or gamer tag that is in violation of this rule will not be allowed to participate in the tournament.


3.3 Dress Code

Each team will be representing their school and district.  We ask that players dress in school appropriate attire.  Any player that is in violation of this rule will not be allowed to participate in the tournament.


3.4 Match Times (Tardiness)

In order to maintain our schedule, we ask that teams be at their next match on time.  Any changes to the schedule will be communicated on the day of the tournament.  We ask that teams be at their assigned station within 5 minutes of their announced match.  Teams that are excessively tardy may forfeit their match.


3.5 Coaching

Coaches are allowed to provide feedback and advice only between games (not during gameplay).  During this time, they are allowed enter the competition area.  Otherwise, coaches must stay in the spectator area.  Coaches may not be in possession of the game controller during competition.  If providing technical support, the coach must first notify the facilitator prior to assisting the player.


3.6 Disputes

During the course of play, issues may arise.  A designated facilitator will resolve issues with the best possible outcome and fairness in mind.  All Region One ESC rulings on disputes are final.

Players are allowed to use their own controllers and cables for competition.  Controllers must not be modified to provide any unfair advantage in competition.  Players can use:


Region One will have a few controllers available but it is ultimately the team’s responsibility to bring their own.  Region One will not be responsible for any connection issues or functionality of a player's personal equipment.
