Kakiat STEAM Academy has had yet another successful volleyball tournament after several years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The last time they had a volleyball tournament was in 2019. Different student teams competed against the middle school teachers and staff. Each team had 10-11 players, and all performed extremely well. The teachers were all super excited and ready to play against the students. Each match was 5-7 minutes long, and then another rotation played out. The teachers made it to the final round. The students ended up beating the teachers. Both teams played exceptionally well and it was a very close game.
Recently, grades 4-6 had the opportunity to meet with Nastasha Pollard. Some scholars were in the auditorium while some were on the Google Meet platform. Nastasha was talking about stories in her life and she read her book Puffy. She proceeded to talk more about what inspired her to write the book and why she wrote it. Puffy is a funny story about a girl and her hair that have everyday struggles. Nastasha wrote this so girls reflect on loving their hair and are excited to take care of it.
Nastasha is an author and an anesthesiologist. She went to the University of Miami and met Kelechi Onyejiaka (the co-author). They have been best friends for ten years and later decided to write a book to provide girls with a reflection of themselves.
Nastasha’s book is about a little girl named Kayla that has a good relationship and has ups and downs with her hair. Kayla’s mom pulls Puffy up and down and it makes Puffy mad and upset. Puffy is so mad that she kicks around and makes Kayla have a bad hair day! Then the fairy hair mother gives Kayla magical hair oil that calms Puffy down.
When Nastasha Pollard read her book, Puffy, I thought it was an outstanding book that really teaches young girls to not be ashamed of their hair. I thought it was really cute how Kayla named her hair and how Nastasha made Puffy have feelings. I just think it's very inspirational to girls who don't like having puffy hair.
You should definitely read Puffy if you want to hear a funny story about a girl and her hair. The book is available in every 4-6 grade class if you want to read it! If you like stories that are fiction, funny, inspirational, and have personification, then this book is for you.
