In honor of our 8th-grade health teacher here at Kakiat STEAM Academy, Myiera and Markalah Henry interview Mr. London on his background and his journey to becoming a health teacher.
As Mr. London begins to explain his journey to becoming a health teacher, he starts with Mrs. Wilmoth's offer to take over as the health teacher. This offer made him elated for the fact that she thought of him to take over the position at Kakiat STEAM Academy, and soon his journey began…
Once he began this opportunity, it became fulfilling every single day. Mr. London has been glad to have the opportunity to work together with students, teach students about their current health, how they can improve their health, and figure out how to make good choices for themselves.
When he took this offer, he had to face certain struggles in becoming a health teacher. Rather than seeing it as a struggle, Mr. London saw it as a challenge to simply overcome. As he took over, students were remote until April, and then some students began returning to school. He found the transformation from virtual to in-person learning a little bit challenging because of the change in the dynamics. By the end of the year 2021, many students came into the building and he started to get into the groove of teaching in person.
There have been many joyous memories for Mr. London while being a health teacher. Memories of how his students received him were great because he felt connected with them and it made him feel like he was on the right path through the feedback and comments that he was receiving from them. When he could see the smile on their faces after a lesson, it made him feel really rewarded. Knowing that he was a generous person, he did a lot of incentivized learning, such as giving out “bonus tickets.” Students were sparked by this type of learning, making them work harder and get excited because they were working toward something.
After months of being a health teacher, Mr. London is currently in college to continue his pathway to becoming a certified health teacher. He officially enrolled in college for special education moderation, but after teaching health, he discovered that this was finally what he wants to do, teach health and special education moderation. Before his passion for teaching, his first career was a 30-year run in the restaurant industry and fashion producer here in the county. Now in the early stages of becoming an educator, Mr. London feels that all of these pathways that he took were in preparation for his life and career as an educator. Looking back at his life and career, he reflected that he doesn’t want anything more than to become a certified health teacher. Furthermore, he wants to share lessons that each student can learn about the components of health. Some of his lessons include human sexuality, aspects of The Health Triangle, phone and computer etiquette, and anti-bullying.
Overall, Mr. London wants students to come to school every day and feel that they are in a safe environment so that they can grow and flourish. Mr. London is a generous, inspiring, wonderful teacher that makes students feel comfortable with him, as well as with themselves!
