Markalah and Myiera Henry
Markalah and Myiera Henry sit down with a Kakiat scholar, Debora Aguirre-Lopez, and explain the events that are going on in the musical (Scenes for Teens).
Coming Soon: Scences for Teens. Since Kakiat STEAM Academy’s Middle School began working on this new musical, so far, the actors have been recording music and filming their scenes. For Scenes for Teens to become a reality, actors have partnered up with other actors to record their scenes and collaborate on how they want to record them. After they record their scenes, the directors will come together and merge their scenes into becoming a real musical. Though we don’t know the exact start date of the musical, we know that it will start in the middle or end of June. Other people are enjoying this new musical and many scholars have joined because they found out that there isn’t a big need for singing, just acting. Last year was a challenging time for former 7th and 8th graders to join the musical because of Covid-19. Scenes for Teens will be an opportunity for 6th, 7th, and 8th graders to join, including the scholars who didn’t get to participate in last year’s musical. There is a big difference between people participating remotely and people being in person because of Covid-19, but that is not stopping them! They are adapting and finding new ways to record in person and from home. So, turn your computers on and get ready to watch the first new virtual musical that is coming soon!

Recently, the 5th grade of Kakiat Steam Academy met with Vincent Marcotrigiano, a college soccer coach and author, over the Google Meet platform. Marcotrigiano played soccer all of his life and later became a soccer coach, and has now written a book called The Adventures of Little Marco and His Soccer Ball Buddy which is based off of his childhood. In his book, he talks about how in his childhood, all of the people around him discouraged him about playing soccer because he was small, but he didn’t let that stop him from playing. He was cut from many teams, many times, but he persevered and he now coaches soccer professionally.
Two 5th graders that met the author, Gabby Rivas & Lourdes Acero, both recommend someone to read a book from Marcotrigiano, and would rate the experience a 9 out of 10. Lourdes told us that Marcotrigiano’s story was very inspiring because some people might feel discouraged, and this story could show them that they can do anything. The author said something that stuck out to Gabby more than the rest, and that was when he told the classes that they should always follow their dreams and that they should never give up. They both agreed that the best parts of the visit were when he described how he got the motivation to play soccer in a dream, and when they got to ask the author interesting questions about his life.
