Middle School is a roller coaster of emotions, sometimes more so for the parents than the students! :) Steve and Annie are both parents of middle schoolers so they have a deep level of empathy and understanding for the stress and worry that comes with parenting this age. Below you will find suggestions for mindsets that transform our focus on struggles as negative and help us to see the beauty and vital need for the bumpy journey. Here at HKMS we celebrate mistakes, we view struggle as preparing for future success and recognize that growth is often invisible at first, but the seeds are planted. During these years, the adults in the lives of middle schoolers are coaches and lighthouses. Our hearts hurt when our children have academic and social issues, but we find solace in the fact that these bumps in the road are preparing them to thrive in life, despite its ups and downs.
An short excerpt from the book "The Anxious Generation" by Jonathan Haidt that help us understand the vital importance of productive struggle. "Young trees need wind to grow."
