We are here together to learn, build relationships, and to enhance our abilities to communicate with others face to face. School is a place for students to disconnect from social media and texting, and focus on connecting with others without a screen. We value the bonds and social skills fostered here in our school.
CELL PHONE, SMARTWATCHES & COMPUTER USAGE GUIDELINES
In order to maintain a safe and positive learning environment, the use of technology is limited to educational purposes during the school day. The following expectations have been implemented to guide students on the appropriate use of their technology during the school day.
Students found with a smart device on their person during the school day will relinquish the device to a staff member. The staff member will deliver the device to the main office. A parent will be notified and will make arrangements to retrieve the student’s device.
Personal use of cell phones and/or smart watches by students is not allowed in the school building. Students may reach their parents by phone in the main office, if necessary. Parents may call the main office to have a message delivered to their child, if needed.
All cell phones and smart watches must be fully powered down during school hours.
Students are not allowed to carry a cell phone on their person or wear a smartwatch. All cell phones and smartwatches must be kept in their locker/backpack during the full duration of the school day.
HKMS Staff will confiscate any personal devices that are on a student’s person (i.e. cell phones, smartwatch) and bring the device to the main office. Parents will be notified and asked to pick up the confiscated device in the main office.
Please do not text or call your child's cell phone during the school day. They will be keeping their devices shut down and in their lockers.
There are multiple ways for you and your child to communicate during the day without the use of his/her/their phone. We have a phone in the main office that any student may use. Additionally, you may call (203-268-8651) or email (hkmsmainoffice@er9.org) and our office staff will get a message to your child.
Cell phones are designed to be addictive, and they are designed well. When you Google cell phone addictions, this is the top hit:
