Although it may seem simple, it's useful to review how and what to recycle.
This page goes over a few of these ideas with helpful links at the bottom!
Recycling is one of the many ways that you create a green home and begin to lower your contribution to plastic pollution!
There are three main destinations for plastic in America: recycling centers, incineration, and landfills. The last two destinations have negative environmental consequences including emissions of greenhouse gasses, water and air pollution.
The more you recycle, the less plastic ends up in landfills. Recycling is a great opportunity to decrease your impact on the climate crisis.
Over 67 years of producing plastic in the United States only about 9% of plastic has been recycled, about 16% has been incinerated, and about 76% has ended up in landfills. Since the 1960's America has produced 35,370,000 tons of plastic.
There are important differences between items that you can recycle and items you should throw out. Recycling incorrect items have several negative consequences such as the contamination of recyclable items, the decreasing in efficiency of sorting recyclable items, and potentially harming workers or machinery at recycling facilities. So, it's important to be careful when separating your trash from your recyclables!
