Curriculum for Excellence

Curriculum for Excellence aims to transform education in Scotland by providing a coherent, more flexible and enriched curriculum to complement academic subject areas for children and young people aged 3 to 18 years.  It provides children with the knowledge, skills & attributes they need to thrive in a modern society and economy, laying the foundations for the development of skills through each person’s life.

The 4 capacities

The purpose of the strategy is outlined in 4 capacities – to enable each child or young person to be:

The Curriculum

There are 9 areas of the curriculum and we aim to provide pupils with a learning experience which offers personalisation, choice, challenge, depth and progression throughout their seven years at primary school. The CfE covers three levels in the primary school. The levels correspond to approximately as follows:

Early Level      –       Nursery and P1

First Level       –       Primary 2, Primary 3, Primary 4

Second Level  –       Primary 5, Primary 6, Primary 7

The 9 curricular areas

Literacy and English – Developing the core skills in reading, writing and talking and listening

Numeracy and Mathematics – Developing skills in number, money, measurement; information handling; shape, position and movement; and problem solvingand enquiry

Expressive Arts – Art, Music, Drama and Dance

Health and Wellbeing–  Social, emotional and physical wellbeing; physical education, physical activity and sport; planning for choices and changes; substance misuse; and relationships, sexual health and parenthood.

Modern Languages

Religious and Moral Education – World religions; personal values and beliefs; forms of worship; key features, key people and artefacts

Sciences  – Planet Earth; forces; electricity and waves; biological systems; materials; and tropical science

Social Studies – People, past events and societies; people, place and the environment; people in society, economy and business

Technologies – Technology and ICT

Interdisciplinary Learning

The CfE encourages the development of skills using a cross curricular/ interdisciplinary learning approach as well as focussing on the core subjects of Literacy and English, Numeracy and Mathematics and Health and Wellbeing.

Throughout the year pupils are involved in discussions to share ideas on what they would like to learn related to interdisciplinary learning themes which will influence how teachers plan the lessons.

Throughout the year we plan themed events for the whole school. These may relate to things such as languages, cultural celebrations, World Book Day, Book Week Scotland and National Gaelic Week. During these themed events, the children’s focus for learning brings in lots of curricular areas related to the theme.
