Foghlam tro Mheadhan na Gàidhlig | Gaelic Medium Education
Our Gaelic Medium provision, Bun-sgoil Ghàidhlig Thornliebank | Thornliebank Gaelic Primary, opened in August 2023. The second P1 cohort joined in August 2024 and are now part of a composite P1/2 class. We look forward to seeing the provision grow over the coming years.
Bun-sgoil Ghàidhlig Thornliebank delivers the curriculum through the Gaelic language. This is Gaelic Medium Education, and the provision here at Thornliebank is for all primary aged pupils in East Renfrewshire. If you are an ERC resident over 2 miles from the school you can apply for transport. Information with regards to admissions and placing requests for those that are not ERC residents can be found here.
In P1-3 it is known as total immersion, learners are immersed in the Gaelic language across all aspects of their learning. Usually from P4 onwards pupils English will be introduced but Gaelic remains the main language of the classroom. Towards the end of P7 there is an expectation that pupils will demonstrate equal competency, if not better, in both languages. Pupils gain from the many benefits of being bilingual and from the rich cultural opportunities as part of the Gaelic community.
