Numeracy - The Adders

We have been learning about symmetry. That means it's the same on both sides. We know how to find symmetry lines in shapes and sometimes there is more than one line. We can copy a picture on the other side to make it symmetrical and we can copy a pattern too.

We have also been learning about data handling. We did a survey on favourite things. Leo did favourite games, Ailsa did favourite song and Reece did favourite sports. We went to other classes to ask them our questions and wrote down the tallys in a table. Then we counted the totals. We can also read bar charts that show favourite things.

Numeracy - The Subtractors

In class we have been learning about ordering numbers to 10,000. We have been really good with ordering numbers and can do it easily now. We found it a bit tricker when the numbers were similar like 7,251 or 7,521. We can also add and take away numbers up to 10,000. We are very good at this.

We have also been learning measuring. We went on trips around the whole school and we measured the weight of lots of different things such as pencils, glue sticks, rubbers and pencil cases. We found it quite hard to balance the scales sometimes but got much better. It can be hard to read scales too when it doesn't count in ones.

Numeracy - The Dividers

In maths we have been learning about different types of angles: obtuse, straight, acute, right, reflex and full. We have also been learning about how much degrees are in the angles.

Then we learned about compass points. North, South, East, West, Northwest, Northeast, Southwest and Southeast are the points of a compass. We had to think about angles and directions at the same time. Like if you started facing North then turned 90 degrees clockwise you would now be facing East. We did this for people finding their way around a city and for planes changing direction.

We also learned about perimeter and area. Perimeter is the length of the outside of a shape. For example, if you have 2 on one side and 6 on the other side you would add them together and you would get 8 then you would add 8 plus 8 and get your answer.

For area imagine you have a rectangle with 5 on one side and 7 on the other then you times them together and get your answer. The area is space inside the shape.

Numeracy - The Multipliers

We have been learning about fractions. Fractions are a part of a whole. First, we thought about where fractions are used in everyday life like when you’re cutting a pizza or in sports when you’re thinking about statistics or test scores.

Then, we learnt about equivalent fractions. This is when a fraction is the same as another fraction and we figure this out by multiplying the numerator and the denominator by the same number. For example 1/2 = 2/4 = 3/6 = 5/10.

After that, we learnt about simplifying fractions which is when you divide the numerator and the denominator by the same number to make them smaller. It is like finding an equivalent fraction that's the smallest possible. For example 10/15 = 2/3.

Literacy - Poetry

In Literacy we have been learning about how to write poems.

First we did some scary Halloween poems, we got to choose our partners and monster or creature. We did it in stanzas of four lines and had to have at least three stanzas. We enjoyed it because it was so fun choosing our characters and writing and drawing about them. The most popular character was the Mummy because there were three mummies.

We also did a firework poem for Bonfire Night and had to include the four senses and had four onomatopoeia words as the subtitle. We planned it out on a planning sheet and when we were sure we had finished, we wrote it in our jotters and added some fireworks surrounding the work to make it look nice.

We did some poppy poems in the style of Haiku, in which we had to choose a partner in another group.

Literacy - The Weasleys

We have been reading two different books full of poems. One was called “Gathering in the Days” and the other was “Jaws and Claws and Things with Wings”. We liked gathering in the days because it had very funny pictures and was interesting for facts.

We learned that not all poems rhyme, some are fiction and some are non-fiction and they are usually written in stanzas which is like a paragraph but for a poem.

We wrote our own poems in the style of the author for "The Cat". We each chose an animal and wrote a poem where you choose words linked with that animal, added "er" at the end of every line. Each line only had two words and the second word was always a verb.

By Stanley and James

Literacy - The Wimpy Kids

In the Wimpy Kids we read the books Something's Drastic and Mind the Gap and in our opinion the poem books are the best.

We also do things called task mats and they are like little boxes with tasks you need to do with the book. Sometimes it is questions to answer or sometimes we have to write our own story or poem. We usually do 2 or 3 each time we do a task mat.

We also made Halloween poems ourselves and they are on the literacy wall. Then, we did a picture of Halloween themed characters like skeletons, zombies, vampires etc to go with our poem.

There are lots of different kinds of poems like some can rhyme and some don't.

By Uzair and Fatima

Literacy - The Fantastic Foxes

We read a book called “I never know how poems start”.

Our favourite one was called "Wrong" and it was about a man who kept saying wrong to the kids. Like he asked which came first Sunday or Monday and when we said Sunday he said wrong. So we said Monday and he said wrong. We liked it because he kept saying wrong and it was silly.

A poem is like a book but all you have to do is rhyme it. But you need to remember that some poems don't rhyme.

We liked writing our own poems like the Halloween ones about scary monsters and the fireworks ones on Bonfire Night.

IDL - Ancient Greece

In IDL we have been learning about Ancient Greece. We found out where is Greece now and how it is different to where the old empire was. We learned about how they traded with other places and what they traded - food and weapons.

We learned when the Ancient Greek Period was compared to other civilisations and made a timeline showing important events like when it started, when it finished and taking over other places.

We learned about Alexander the Great and how his empire affected different people. For example it was really good for him because he became more powerful. But for the people of Thebes it was bad because they were killed or turned into slaves. It was good for the people of Egypt because they didn't like the old Persian Empire and liked Alexander better.

We learned about daily life for men, women and children and about their homes, food and clothing.

Homes – most ancient Greek homes were designed around a central courtyard. The richer homes had a kitchen but the poor only had a campfire for a kitchen. The poorer homes had 2 or 3 rooms and the richer homes had 12 or more rooms.

Food – for breakfast they had bread which they dipped in wine. For lunch they always had a lighter meal. For dinner, fish was very popular. Dinner is usually eaten with friends. The Ancient Greeks used a wide range of herbs and spices.

Clothing – the clothing was very simple in Ancient Greece. The main two things were the Peplos and the chiton. The two types of tunics could be styled and pinned in various ways. They were made from wool or linen. Both men and women wore tunics. Women also wore brooches. Purple was the most popular colour of clothes. Many ancient Greeks wore socks, sandals or boots.

We learned that Greek women were not allowed out of their houses unless their husbands said they could go - we were not happy about that!

Next we learned about Athens vs Sparta, the similarities and differences. Sparta was where the soldiers lived and the women there had a lot more freedom. They could leave the house whenever they wanted. Athens had a democracy but Spart had two kings who were in charge. Athens had a lot of culture and art and thought that was important, but in Sparta having a strong army was more important. In Athens girls could not go to school. They stayed at home to learn how to cook and clean and look after children. But in Sparta girls had an education just like the boys.

We learned about The Ancient Olympics and how they were different from today. We looked at Ancient Greek pottery to see what kinds of sports they did.

We also learned about Greek Gods and Goddesses. We made learning presentations at home about a God we chose and they were amazing! Everyone did such a good job. We really liked the funny photos at the end!

Then we learned Greek myths and legends:

Medusa

Short story -- Medusa admired herself so much. She thought she would make a better sculpture than Athena the Greek goddess. She looked in a mirror at Athena's temple to admire herself. Athena appeared in the mirror and said you think you're more pretty than me. Athena turned Medusa into a horrible hag with snakes whirling in her hair. Anyone who locked gaze with Medusa got turned into stone.

Pandora's Box

Short story-- One day Mercury gave Pandora a box and told her not to open it. Pandora one day got too curious and opened the box and inside there were bugs that made you ill and all sorts of other bad things. Pandora's Husband came to help her and found a butterfly that came out of the box and flew away. That has hope.

The Trojan horse

One day there was a beautiful princess called Helen. She was kidnapped by a prince of Troy so her husband wanted to get her back. He took at army but the walls were too high and they couldn't get in to rescue her. They tried for years but they couldn't. But then they thought of a trick. They built a huge wooden horse and left it outside Troy as a gift, and then left to go home. Or they pretended to. What actually happened was the horse had all the Spartan soldiers inside, so when the Trojans brought the present into the city, they waited until they were all asleep and then attacked. They rescued Helen and took over Troy.

RME - Diwali

Diwali is the festival of light. It is celebrated by Indians all over the world during November. To celebrate, the keep their doors open to let in good spirits and take away any bad. They also light lots of candles to let in light.

We learned about the story of Rama and Sita which is where Hindus believe that the traditions of Diwali started. There once was a king that sent Rama into the forest for 14 years because they thought he was going to take the throne after the king. Lakshman and Sita went with Rama even though their parents did not want them to go. They built a hut in the forest but they soon realised that they weren’t the only ones there. There was Ravanasura a demon with 10 heads 20 arms and his palace which was located in Sri Lanka. His sister saw Rama and transformed into a beautiful women and asked Rama if she could marry him he said no ask Lakshman. Then she got angry and turned into her demon form and attacked Sita but Lakshmman cut her nose when she tried to. Then she was angry and told her brother Ravanasura and he wanted to capture Sita so he turned into a old man and asked for food then he captured her and took her to his  palace. Rama couldn’t find where Sita was so he asked monkeys for help and when they found were she was they built a bridge and defeated Ravanasura and found their way home with candles and fireworks that were lit by the kingdom.

After we learned the story we had to retell it in our own words using a storyboard. We also drew pictures to help tell the story.

PE - Gymnastics

We have been learning how to do gymnastics. In the first week we looked at lots of different body shapes such as tuck, T, L, star, Y and bridge. We also looked at balances and how to have only 2 or 3 or 4 body parts touching the floor at once. Then we thought about partner balances. We had to make a routine with 3 body shapes and 2 balances in our groups. Have a look at the pictures to see what we did.

By Musty and Bilal

The next week we used lots of equipment like vaults and mats and tables. We had to do 8 different stations.

Teddy bear roll - in the teddy bear roll we had to put our legs out and roll round in a circle

Pencil roll - in the pencil roll we would go in a pencil shape with our arms and legs stretched all the way out and roll like a pencil rolling

Vault and springboard - we had to run and jump on the springboard and jump up on top of the vault. Then we had to jump off onto the crash mat

Forward and backward rolls - we started with a forward roll, you have to remember to tuck your head under. Then when we were confident, we could try a backwards roll.

Balance beam on an upside down bench - we had to walk along the bench and balance without falling down

Bench to table jump - we had to walk up the bench to the top of the table then jump off onto the mat. We could choose a star jump, a tuck jump or a pike jump.

Two tables then jump - we had to step up onto the small table then onto the bigger table then jump off.

Our favourite station was the vault because we could run on to the springboard and jump onto the vault and do a shape and fall onto the mat. We had lots of fun crashing into the mat!

By Musty and Bilal

The final week we had the equipment out again, but this time it was more challenging.

Art - Ancient Greek Pottery

In class we have been learning about Greek pottery on our amazing class board. We have been learning about how Greeks made the pottery and what the pictures meant on the pottery. So as a class we decided  to make pottery ourselves not actually pottery, but pottery on a piece paper. First we drew our, then we coloured it using earth colours - yellow, brown, orange, red and some white. Next we cut it up and stuck it onto black paper for a good contrast.

We think they look stunning and we had a great time doing them!

Art - Bonfire Night

For our bonfire art we all had four options of we could pick from.

Here are all the options we got.

We liked that we got to choose our favourite type of art to do.

Growth Mindset Live Call

We had anther live call all about Growth Mindset. This time we focused on self esteem. This means how you see yourself.

If you have good self esteem then you will be confident in yourself and try new things. But if you have bad self esteem you think you can't do things and won't want to try anything new because you'll worry that you'll be bad at it and people will laugh at you.
