The Season of Celebration is Here

With the arrival of June, we have turned our attention to end of year activities as we start to wrap the year up! The last two weeks have been packed with ceremonies for our new National Junior Honor Society members, a visit by graduating EPHS seniors, Band and Chorus Concerts, playoff games, and the display of RMS for next year's 6th graders. It also means that this is the last RMS Family Bulletin before we take a nice break on June 15th, the last day of school. Don't worry, another Family Bulletin will be published as a way of closing out the year. In the meantime, enjoy the photos of events, and don't forget to check out our social media pages on Facebook and Twitter for more great news about RMS! Here are details about the coming weeks.

Announcements

  • Grade 8 Family Celebration: On Monday, June 13th at 10:30 am, we will host the Grade 8 Family Celebration. Even though the word Family is in the title, we are still concerned about packing too many people into our auditorium. Therefore, we are limiting the number of family members to 2. We understand that there are circumstances in which a student may have more than 2 parents, so exceptions can be made. However, we do ask that siblings stay at home. At the end of the event (around 11:30 am), we will be heading out to the triangle in front of the school to take photos and say our goodbyes. Other family members are welcome to attend then. Doors to RMS open at 10:15 am.

What a great story of success, hard work, grit, commitment and Scholarship. Tahlia was recommended to the Dean’s List by her 8th grade teachers. Mrs. Hammons writes, “Tahlia is my most improved student during the 3rd quarter. She is now passing for the year after turning it around this quarter. She came to class each day prepared and ready to learn. She participated every day. She completed extra credit. She asked for feedback and revised assignments as needed. When she was absent, she checked in to make sure she caught up on what was missed. I am so proud of her efforts and expect that she will end the year strong.” In fact, she is…achieving 1st honors in the 4th quarter. Way to go, Tahlia!!!

Thank you, Nick, for demonstrating great Character and being a role model for both your students and colleagues.

RIVERSIDE MIDDLE SCHOOL FAMILY BULLETIN: Updated April 10, 2022

4th Quarter here we come!

The beginning of April has brought us to the 4th quarter of what has been quite the school year. We know that we are not out of the woods when it comes to COVID, but there have been a lot of positive signs that we will have a safer end of the school year. Some students and adults will continue to take precautions like wearing masks and having COVID tests for the foreseeable future. We are confident that everyone in our school community will respect the individual choices that we make when it comes to our safety. That can be said for the Spring Fling Dance that will take place on Thursday Night. Thank you to everyone who has helped us get to this better point and let's enjoy a fun and hopefully sunny April Vacation!

RIVERSIDE MIDDLE SCHOOL FAMILY BULLETIN: Updated March 27 2022

We're getting ready for RICAS

It's that time of year again. RMS will be getting ready for the annual state assessment, Rhode Island Comprehensive Assessment System test (RICAS). On Tuesday and Wednesday, all students will take the ELA part of the test. We know that it's impossible to capture a student's academic progress perfectly with one test, but the RICAS does give us a good indication of where we stand compared to other schools in Rhode Island. The results also play a part in determining our grade on our State Report Card. The good news is that our kids have been working really hard this year to improve their writing (using the SRSD program) and writing is an important part of RICAS. We encourage all families to encourage kids to try their absolute best on the RICAS so that we can get a good snapshot of our level student achievement in 2022.

Scholarship: Mrs. D’Arezzo and the Math Counts Team

This year, the MathCounts team worked very hard each week preparing for this year’s Chapter Competition. Riverside Middle School finished very well among the public and private schools of Rhode Island that competed against each other.

As a result of this competition, four RMS students have been invited to compete in the State Meet on April 2 at Bryant University. These students are: Brady (8), Anirudh (7), Abigail (6) and Kevin (6).

Congratulations to the entire MathCounts team which also includes: Neha (6), Riley (6), Ian (6), Tyler (6), Zachary (6) and Janelle (7). Thank you to 6th grade math teacher, Mrs. D’Arezzo, for your time and leadership by representing RMS and for coaching and preparing our young mathematicians through this experience!

Community: The Moran Family

physical Riverside Middle School is blessed to have a great community of families that support our children and get involved in many positive ways. One shining example is the Moran family!

Hope is an 8th grader and leader at RMS. President of the NJHS and anchor of VTV, Hope leads by example everyday and has organized many of the student fundraisers we have at school. Hope’s parents, Amy and Stu, are both teachers and wonderful role models in our community.

Amy is a social studies teacher at MMS and was the driving force in the Wildcat’s victory over the Vikings in the Soup-er Bowl… collecting over 3,500 cans for the Hope & Faith organization. A great colleague and dynamic teacher, Amy brings passion and positive energy into everything she does.

Stu, a physical education teacher in Barrington, is a valued member of RMS’s School Improvement Team. You may often see him jump onto VTV in the morning, adding advice, humor or a message for our students on feel-good Fridays. Amy and Stu are both dedicated and involved with the Special Olympics of RI and our unified sports programs.

Finally, Hope’s brother Cormac, a 5th grader at Waddington, has already demonstrated his leadership and character at RMS by organizing and volunteering to clean up the grounds around our school with his friends…future Vikings already making an impact today!

True Townies, thanks, again, to the Moran Family for making a positive difference in our schools and community everyday.

Character: Olivia - grade 6

Mrs. Nelson was pleased to recommend one of her coding students to the Dean’s List this past week. Sixth grader, Olivia, was very helpful to a student in her class. When he was having trouble getting logged into his Chromebook and with his task, Olivia noticed and went over to help. She calmly explained what to do and made sure that he understood how to proceed on his own for the next time. Great job Olivia for recognizing and stepping in to help a fellow classmate in a positive way.

Community: Olivia - Grade 6

As you know, our past fundraising event, “The Soup-er Bowl,” was a huge success and no student contributed more cans than 6th grader Olivia. Olivia helped Mrs. Barnowski’s homeroom collect almost 400 canned goods. This comes as no surprise as Olivia and her family (pictured here with her father, Stephen Costa) have always been active and passionate about helping out our Townie community. For the past seven years, they volunteer and have helped organize the East Providence Community Christmas Dinner which helps hundreds of people each year who may be less fortunate and don’t want to spend the holidays alone. Thank you to Olivia and her parents, Lisa and Stephen, for their grace and continued support to RMS and the East Providence community as a whole.

Character: Donovan and Jalena - Grade 8

Middle School drama…never! Although I’m being a little facetious, from time to time, young adults may need some guidance and direction in how to balance and manage the social aspect of being in middle school with character and respect. Our experienced staff and parents do play an important role in teaching our kids but it’s nice to see when fellow students support each other, as well. Recently, Donovan and Jalena both stepped up in a positive way by using their words and actions to help diffuse some potential drama between peers. Instead of adding to it or simply doing nothing, they both recognized how to help out with character and leadership.

RIVERSIDE MIDDLE SCHOOL FAMILY BULLETIN: Updated February 27, 2022

Change is in the air

With COVID cases dropping, things are looking up for us, but we are not quite out of the woods. Starting on March 5th, the schools in East Providence will have a mask-optional policy. That means that we won't be asking kids to pull up their masks, but it is expected that plenty of people at RMS will continue to mask-up. We are hoping that everyone respects personal choices. Hopefully, by the end of the year, no one will have to wear a mask - but that remains to be seen. In the meantime, we will take this as a good sign that life will return to more normalcy. Information about the mask policy is below, along with other details about the coming week.

13RIVERSIDE MIDDLE SCHOOL FAMILY BULLETIN: Updated February 13, 2022

#Community

Anyone who has followed the RMS Family Bulletin or our Facebook page knows that scholarship, character, and community are values we talk about a lot at RMS. This past week, we had a great showing of community support as RMS families brought in over 1500 cans of food for the Hope & Faith Drive, a local service organization. The collection was part of the Soup-er Bowl, a joint effort of the RMS National Junior Honor Society and Student Council. Even though we fell a little short in our attempt to top Martin Middle School, our sister school, the Hope & Faith Drive and people in need in our community were winners. It's good to know that even during difficult times, RMS is willing to step up as a community. Here are some more details about things that are happening at RMS.

If you would like to nominate someone for outstanding efforts in scholarship, character, community, leadership or citizenship, send an email to bpetsch@epschoolsri.com.

Character: Jeanie, Lisa, Anne and Stephanie of the RMS Cafeteria Staff:

Hot lunch is back at RMS! It is one of the favorite times of day for most students… sharing some time with friends but also having the choice of some great meals and snacks. Jeanie, Lisa, Anne and Stephanie arrive early each morning to prepare breakfast and lunch for RMS and the local elementary schools. Pizza, sandwiches, a burger bar, healthy salads, grilled cheese, chicken patties and nuggets are everyday staples but each day, the ladies prepare a daily special which is always a hit, such as Taco Tuesday. Each Thursday is “Love Rhody” day, featuring foods and ingredients from local farms, dairies and other businesses in Rhode Island. Hard workers, the ladies are professional, personable and always supportive to our students’ needs. Thank you ladies for providing outstanding meals and service each day to the staff and students of Riverside Middle School! Mangia!

Scholarship: Annabelle - Grade 8:

Annabelle is not only an honors student and member of the NJHS, she’s also a superb librarian! During her WIN block one morning, Annabelle came to the library to get some work done. When a group of students came in to return and check out books, Annabelle recognized that Mrs. Ash was busy working with some students so she jumped up to assist. Noticing that Mrs. Ash was teaching, Annabelle helped the students find the books they were looking for and correctly signed them all out. Thanks for being such a big help Annabelle, it is appreciated!

Community: Jayden and Janelle - Grade 7

After two quarters Janelle has perfect 100’s in every core class. That is amazing! Janelle is a hard-worker and all-around great kid. New to the school this year, Janelle nominated her friend, Jayden Alford to the Dean’s List. Janelle writes: “When I first came to Riverside, I sat in front of Jayden. We had identical schedules with every class together. He welcomed me by helping me find each class and introducing me to the teachers and other students.” At lunch, Jayden invited Janelle to his table, making her feel comfortable and at home…a great example of demonstrating kindness and Community!

RIVERSIDE MIDDLE SCHOOL FAMILY BULLETIN: Updated January 23, 2022

Cold weather is not slowing us down!

It's been frigid outside in recent weeks, but we keep moving along at RMS. Last week, students took their iReady midyear assessment, and we are happy to say that most showed growth in both reading and math (as hoped and expected). In fact, there were some huge jumps among certain groups of students. Evidence points to student achievement slowly getting back to where we were pre-pandemic. We do have a lot of work still ahead of us, but we will take the good news. With the new quarter upon us, it is a good time for students to reassert themselves and commit to improving in their academic areas. Here is some more information about the coming weeks.

The Dean's List

  • Mr. Petsch is happy to present the Dean's List - the recognition of RMS community members who display scholarship, community, and character!

Scholarship: Keira

An outstanding young lady and leader, Keira earns a spot on this week’s Dean’s List for her outstanding efforts in the classroom and extracurricularly. A member of the National Junior Honor Society, Keira has earned first honors each quarter this year. As a student athlete, she is captain of the girls soccer team, basketball team and an amazing hurdler for the track team in the spring. Keira is well-liked by all of her peers and her teachers continually praise Keira for her kindness, character and work-ethic. Keira is truly a leader here at RMS!

Character: Daniel

Each morning, Daniel takes it upon himself to voluntarily hold not one, but two doors open for the students entering the building. The mask definitely doesn’t hide the smile that is always on Daniel’s face throughout the day and as he pleasantly greets his peers in the morning. Daniel is genuinely a nice kid to everyone! He achieves high grades and gets involved…as he is a member of the NJHS, after school chorus and cooking club. Daniel will often show his school spirit on Townie Tuesdays, Bow Tie Thursday and every spirit day we have at RMS. Keep up the great work, Daniel!

Community: Ms. Kenahan and Mrs. McCarthy

For the 5th year, Riverside Middle School has delivered a little cheer during the holiday season to the residents of Waterview Villa Rehabilitation and Health Care Center. Ms. Kenahan and Mrs. McCarthy coordinate and lead this event each year in which students collect blankets, puzzle books, tissues, soft, cozy socks etc…items that are much appreciated but also bring bright smiles to the faces of all of the residents. This experience is heartwarming not only for Waterview Villa, but also for the students and staff who have donated their time and resources to this rewarding and important community endeavor. Ms. Kenahan and Mrs. McCarthy are both the department coordinators for the math and social studies departments respectively at RMS and it is no surprise that they have each previously been honored as the East Providence district teacher of the year!

RIVERSIDE MIDDLE SCHOOL FAMILY BULLETIN: Updated January 9, 2022

We're back on the road!

While our road may not be as smooth as the one in the photo above, we are hopeful that we will continue to make our way safely! Like most schools in our area, we have had a number of COVID positive cases, and a lot of uncertainty about the near future. The good news is that we are weathering these storms fairly well, as students and teachers are keeping up with learning, and new RIDOH guidelines are calling for less time away from school. Things are far from perfect, but RMS is keeping up fairly well, thanks to a strong school-community, and a lot of cooperation on the part of students and families. As always, please reach out with any concerns or questions, and we will figure this thing out together! Here are some details about the coming weeks.

The Dean's List

  • Mr. Petsch is happy to present the Dean's List - the recognition of RMS community members who display scholarship, community, and character!

Character: Officer Tammy

Congratulations to our very own School Resource Officer, Corporal Tammy David, who completed her 4th Super Plunge this past weekend at the Salty Brine State Beach in Narragansett, RI. The Super Plunge is an effort to increase both awareness and fundraising for the Special Olympics Rhode Island. Unlike a traditional plunge, individuals jump into near-freezing water once EVERY HOUR for a 24 hour period. 24 hours, 24 plunges, full submersion, no excuses, no backing out!

This is a true testament to Tammy’s character. As our school's SRO Corporal David is an invaluable part of our staff. She does more than just keep our building safe… she builds positive relationships with our students and families on a daily basis and helps tie our school and community together.

Community: Ms. Gustafson, Shelby, Jaime, Abigail, and Layla

Congratulations to Ms. Gustafson and her crew of painters who were honored at the last School Committee meeting. This past summer, Ms. Gustafson, in collaboration with her students and some local residents, painted a mural along the East Bay Bike Path near the Riverside Square. Steve Johnson, Riverside resident and owner of Johnson Insulation, donated the back of his building as the “canvas” for the mural. RMS Students: Shelby, Jamie, Abigail, Layla, and Alana all donated their time, artistic ability and resources to help make this community project a success!

Character: Ms. Bullock, Blessing, Oceanna, Pooja, and Monica

Mr. Kirkutis’s student teacher, Ms. Bullock helped students during her PE class to create presentations about the dangers of vaping. Furthermore, Blessing, Oceanna, Pooja and Monica all spoke and presented their anti-vaping messages to the 6th graders during their health classes. It takes a lot of courage to present and speak in front of others and Ms. Bullock’s students were all pros and did an unbelievable job.

PTSA News

    • PTSA Holiday Shop: Thank you to the students, parents, and community members who supported our Holiday Shop. It was a success for the RMS PTSA and a nice way to bring some joy to our students and families. Thank you, especially, to the parents who came out to volunteer to work at the shop. It was nice to make some new friends!

Spotlight on Learning

    • Math Curriculum Update: The Math Department is excited to announce that we are wrapping up a month-long pilot of three high quality, state approved curriculums. Our goal as a school community is to get input from teachers, administrators, parents, and most importantly, students about the curriculum resources we are going to use next year! You have probably seen some different materials coming home this past month, and new programs being used. We polled students in recent weeks ago and got some valuable insight into how they felt about what they were doing in math class. Our next steps will be choosing which of the three curriculums fits best in our school community. We will present our findings to the school committee in the coming months based on the feedback we received. Thank you for allowing us time to discover what works best, tweak what doesn’t, and continue to put your children’s education at the forefront of our priorities of math instruction.

The Dean's List

Mr. Petsch is happy to present the Dean's List - the recognition of RMS community members who display scholarship, community, and character!

Character: Natasha - Grade 7

Natasha joins an elite club of individuals who have earned a spot on the Dean’s list for a 2nd time! Social worker Ms. Matook nominated Natasha for her character. When a new girl, nervous and shy, joined her chorus class, Natasha stepped right in to help her out and make her feel comfortable. She shared her music book with her, showed her which lines to sing and also explained how the music notes work. After class, Natasha even came up to the student and told her how great she did. This behavior is typical for Natasha as she is friendly and helpful to all of her peers and has a knack for finding situations to become involved with in a positive way. We are lucky to have great role models and caring students, such as Natasha!

Scholarship: Esme - Grade 6

Nominated by Ms. Simpson, Esme is a star in her instructional lab. After completing her own work, Esme will help tutor the other students who may be struggling on an assignment. She earns Jolly Ranchers for her efforts but unselfishly will give them to the students she helps as she says, “For a job well done.” Esme earned all A’s for the first quarter and got to participate in the Honors Celebration last week! Congratulations and keep up the great work, Esme!

Community: Ella - Grade 7

I would like to recognize Ella for demonstrating our core value, Community. Each day on her own, Ella volunteers to help clean during her lunch. After she finishes eating, Ella will walk around the cafeteria and sweep up any food or trash that has fallen on the floor. Furthermore, she will pleasantly interact with her peers at the different tables as she works. The cafeteria has never looked so clean (especially on Popcorn Fridays) thanks to Ella’s initiative and pride in her school!

Community: RMS PTSA

Speaking about Popcorn Friday, a huge thanks goes out to PTSA members Kelly Iacavone, Nicole Ferreira, Michelle Souse, and Shawna Evans (and more help on the way!) for volunteering to make and sell popcorn during lunch each Friday. All the money raised goes to the PTSA and back to the students and staff of RMS. Thank you, ladies, for your hard work, dedication and the best popcorn around!

RMS mourns the loss of Charles Vermette.

RIVERSIDE MIDDLE SCHOOL FAMILY BULLETIN: Updated November 7, 2021

Onward to Quarter Two

Last week, we were sad to hear about the passing of Charles Vermette, an East Providence institution, and a former school administrator for many years. Our gym is named after him, as is the award given to our top scholar-athletes each year. Chuck always expected the best of his students in the classrooms, and on the courts and fields. He also raised a family of Townies who embodied the principles of scholarship, character, and community that we hold as important at RMS. As a school community, we offer our heartfelt condolences to the Vermette Family.

The beginning of November brings the start of quarter 2. That means that report cards will be ready later in the week and students will be taking some new classes. Parents are asked to keep an eye on Skyward and continue to communicate with teachers. Also, don't forget that Thursday is Veteran's Day and RMS will be closed. Thank you to all of the armed-services veterans in our school community for your service to our country. Here are some more details about the coming week.

The Dean's List

  • Updated for November 7, 2021: Mr. Petsch is happy to present the Dean's List - the recognition of RMS community members who display scholarship, community, and character!

Community: Aubrey and Brody

Sensational Siblings: It’s a fact that the Facteaus are all-around awesome kids and a big part of the RMS community. Eighth-grader, Aubrey, is co-captain of the girl’s soccer team, member of the Student Council and National Junior Honor Society. She is also one of our star reporters on VTV...our video morning announcement show. Her younger brother Brody excelled on the boy’s soccer team as a 6th-grader and like his older sister, was able to achieve high grades in the classroom while balancing his extracurricular activities. Furthermore, their mom, Heather, serves an important role as a paraprofessional in our Life Skills program. Thank you to the Facteau family for being such great role models and members of the RMS family!

Character: Tyius

This past week, Tyius was nominated to the Dean’s List not once, but by two separate teachers...Ms. Knight for his unbelievable character in the classroom and Ms. Foster, for his academic excellence. Talk about scholarship, Tyius earned straight A’s for the first quarter including four perfect 100’s! He is an amazing young man, a pleasure to talk to, a member of the NJHS and is a positive influence on all of his classmates. Tyius looks forward to using his skills as a mentor on our Unified Basketball program this upcoming season.

Recognizing Magnificent Staff: Pam Jensen, Katie Grifka, and Jessica Matook

As we all have been adjusting to school being back in-person full-time, Social Emotional Learning (SEL) has become more important than ever. Luckily, RMS is blessed to have the team of Pam Jensen, Jessica Matook and Katie Grifka at school. Mrs. Jensen, our school psychologist and social workers Ms. Matook and Mrs. Grifka all provide important support and advocate for the students and staff of RMS on a daily basis. Consummate professionals, they each bring with them a wealth of knowledge, strategies and a kind spirit that carries over to everyone they come in contact with!

It seemed like more students and staff members participated in Spirit Week than ever before! The Dean's List

  • Updated for October 24, 2021: Mr. Petsch is happy to present the Dean's List - the recognition of RMS community members who display scholarship, community, and character!

Character: Jordan - Grade 6

Mr. Lyons would like to recognize Jordan Marria to the Dean's List this week for demonstrating amazing Character. “Each morning while out at my morning bus duty, I witness Jordan being kind and helpful to others. Each morning when 7:50am rolls around and it is time to let students into the building, Jordan assists me holding the doors to the building. Jordan greets each student with a "Good Morning,” "Have a nice day,” or some other pleasantry. I believe Jordan makes a difference each morning by being kind to others and starting the day off on a positive note.”

Character: Abigail & Alice - Grade 6

Normally, students are recognized by their teachers but in this case, both Abigail and Alice were nominated by fellow classmates this week for their kindness and helpfulness in the classroom.

Both Abi and Alice are in line to make First Honors for the 1st quarter with high A’s in all of their classes!

Scholarship: Derek - Grade 7

Mrs. Tarantelli nominated Derek this week for his efforts as a scholar. Derek is not only an 'A' student, but he has taken on the responsibility of tutoring classmates who need help in science class after school. Derek is a role model for other students not only because of his hard work and scholarship, but for his strong character. Keep up the good work, Derek!

Community: Joseph and Evan

We had quite the showing at the Townie Pride Parade this week. A number of students displayed their RMS Spirit and represented our school in a positive way. Two students, however, jumped at the chance to carry the 'Our Townie Pride' banner for RMS. Evan and Joseph led the troops around the track at Pierce Field in a display of Townie Pride!

Recognizing Magnificent Staff: Mrs. Wallace

Ms. Wallace is a key part of the RMS community and deserves to be recognized for the way she consistently goes above and beyond to support her students and colleagues. As a teacher, she seamlessly weaves her way into co-taught classes to support the flow of instruction and any students who may need clarification or help. As a fellow educator, she makes time despite a busy and unconventional schedule to connect and communicate about instruction. She is often there with a kind word, a helpful and thoughtful suggestion when problem solving, or simply a smile of encouragement. We are lucky to have such a friend and colleague here at RMS. She deserves to know that what she does matters and that she positively impacts the teachers and students daily. She is the best!

RIVERSIDE MIDDLE SCHOOL FAMILY BULLETIN: Updated October 10, 2021

We are past the half-way mark.

With Columbus Day Weekend finally here, we are just past the half-way mark of the quarter. Students will have had plenty of assignments, tests, quizzes, and projects. Many grades have been posted to Skyward. Since all parents have access to Skyward, we do not send home progress reports. Therefore, all parents are encouraged to login to Skyward and review class grades with their kids. Feel free to reach out to teachers or guidance counselors with any concerns. (There is a link to the email directory at the top of this page.)

With the cooler weather coming, we will continue to monitor our COVID response, and make adjustments as needed. We have been fortunate that positive cases have been fairly isolated, but we know that at any time, we may see a change. Everyone at RMS is asked to follow common-sense protocols in order to keep us all as healthy as possible. Parents are reminded to reach our to Nurse Wallace (dwallace@epschoolsri.com) with any questions or concerns. With any luck, and as we get COVID under control, we will start to see things return to a more normal way of doing things. In the meantime, thank you for continuing to follow practices that help us all stay healthy.

Finally, at the top of the page, there are a number of photos from Fall Fun Friday. The event was a simple way to recognize our kids' hard work over the past month. We were lucky to have a beautiful, sunny day and we enjoyed some nice snacks supplied by our PTSA. Check out the RMS Facebook Page for some more fun photos. With any luck, we will be able to have some more safe outdoor events. Here are some details about the coming weeks.

Spotlight on Learning

ELA Department Introduces a New Writing Program: English teachers and students have started preparing to introduce the SRSD writing process. Over the past few weeks, students in all grade levels participated in a pre-assessment to show what they know about writing. As part of these pre-assessments, teachers introduced the idea of self-talk, which is the idea that the way we talk to ourselves in our minds or out loud has a direct impact on achievement. Next week, teachers will introduce the core writing routines that will drive our writing practices all year long. We are excited to embark on this new journey and look forward to the progress students will show this year in their writing skills. Ask your kids how they are using the new writing process in their classes!

The Dean's List

Mr. Petsch is happy to present the Dean's List - the recognition of RMS community members who display scholarship, community, and character!

Scholarship: Keirra (Grade 8) & and Mrs. Hammons

Nominated for Scholarship this week is 8th grader, Keirra Miguel. Mrs. Hammons writes, “Keirra consistently and enthusiastically participates in class activities and class discussions. She is diligent, attentive, on task, and asks questions as needed. Each day she models to the other students in class how to be a student leader. These habits will continue to help her succeed throughout the year in all of her classes. Keep working hard, Keirra! Your efforts matter!” Mrs. Hammons is an 8th grade English teacher and department head. Like Keirra, she is a model for her colleagues whose passion, dedication and school spirit do not go unnoticed. Mrs. Hammons challenges and engages all of her students but she also makes a great effort each day to reach out to parents and keep them informed of their child’s progress!

Character: Ean (Grade 8)

It’s the little things that matter and often go unnoticed. As the boy’s soccer team was waiting for their bus to arrive after school, Ean noticed that they were blocking the door as the staff returned from afternoon bus duty. Being the great captain that he is, Ean recognized this, spoke up and directed his teammates to move aside and hold the doors open for the teachers. He is an awesome young man and exhibits class and sportsmanship on and off the field. Way to go, Ean!

Character: Victoria (Grade 8) & Envyie (Grade 6)

Victoria and Envyie are shining examples of students showing great Character at RMS. Both ladies recognized when a fellow classmate needed some extra TLC and stepped up into action. They initially offered their own support and kindness to their peers but “by seeing something and saying something” also made the effort to seek out an adult to help, as well. Their kind and maure efforts go a long way to make RMS a better Community!

Community: Carley (Grade 8) & and Hope (Grade 8)

Cross Country coach, Ms Gustafson nominated these two awesome ladies to the Dean's list. During the last two home meets, Hope and Carly volunteered their time to direct runners during the race so they wouldn’t get lost. They even made bright arrow signs to help with this. Furthermore, as the runners raced by, Carley and Hope would encourage and cheer on runners from all teams...not just from RMS. Thank you ladies for being such wonderful ambassadors for our school and demonstrating what being a Viking is all about!

RIVERSIDE MIDDLE SCHOOL FAMILY BULLETIN: Updated September 26, 2021

We are hitting our stride.

The Autumn is finally here and we are well into the school year. Even though everything is not quite back to normal, a lot of things are feeling pretty good around RMS, especially because we had a successful Meet the Teachers Night. Students have plenty of homework, test, quizzes, and projects to complete and we are starting up some after school activities. Kids are making new friends and learning how to work in a place with a lot of different personalities, traditions, and expectations. The hope is that our students will learn and practice the responsibilities of being part of a dynamic organization. We will continue to provide opportunities for students to develop scholarship, community, and character.

It's also not a surprise that we are seeing some challenging behaviors as we are finally all together after 18 months. We had a bout with some vandalism as some kids were influenced by social media. We have also been informed of an increase in the presence of vaping items. These things are not unknown in many schools, but safety is a top priority at RMS and we take things like this seriously. Parents are asked to start conversations about the influences of society that can have a negative impact on kids. We also ask kids that if they "see something, say something." So many of the issues that we have at school are resolved because responsible kids tell us. It is good to know that so many of our kids and families buy into the sense of community that we have built at Riverside Middle School. Thank you for the part that you play in making that happen.

Below are details about the coming weeks at RMS. Be sure to check out announcements from our PTSA and the Dean's List in back!

The Dean's List

The Dean's List is back! Mr. Petsch is happy to present the first installment of the year and to recognize students for displaying scholarship, community, and character!

Scholarship: Nihzell (Grade 7)

When filling out the cover sheets in the morning, Mr. Perry may have found another awesome substitute teacher for RMS. When Mrs. Wallace had to step out of her math class and into the hallway to attend to a small matter, Nihzell told her, “I got this!” He got up in front of the class and continued to teach the lesson...and perfectly, Mrs. Wallace mentioned. This was not surprising as Nihzell is always polite, hard-working, outgoing, willing to step up whenever he can and represents our core value Scholarship!

Community: Joseph (Grade7)

Nominated to the Dean’s List by his math teacher, Mrs. Villucci, Joseph noticed that a new student at RMS was having some trouble following her schedule and navigating the building. Each period, Joseph made it a point to find that student and walk her to her next class, even when they weren’t in the same room together. Mrs. Villucci noticed that chivalry is not dead at RMS and recognized Joseph for representing our core value Community!

Character: Makayla, Tayla, Richard, and Seth (Grade 6)

Earning the first spot on this year’s Dean’s List is a group of sensational sixth graders who all exemplify our core value Character. During lunch, a student opened up an overly-carbonated bottle of seltzer and unfortunately covered the table (and himself) with his drink. That’s when Makayla, Tayla, Richard and Seth sprung into action. Without being told, they got napkins and cleaned up the table while also consoling their classmate who was upset over what had happened. As 6th graders, these kind-hearted kids are already stepping up as young leaders and also showed tremendous pride by keeping the cafeteria clean and by being good friends and peers.

RIVERSIDE MIDDLE SCHOOL FAMILY BULLETIN: Updated September 12, 2021

Scholarship, Community, & Character

With a few weeks behind us, we are starting to get into a groove at RMS. Students know all of their teachers and have experienced our rotating schedule. Everyone has done their best to stay safe in the hallways and classrooms and we have experienced the responsibilities of dining together in the cafeteria. The school-year is off to a good start, but we still have a lot of work to do as we begin our first full week.

This year, in addition to navigating some new ways of doing things, we are going to emphasize three key core values - scholarship, community, and character. Without question, a central goal of schooling is helping kids to gain knowledge and succeed as scholars. We will also continue to build upon the Townie spirit and sense of community that binds us together. Each RMS student will also be provided opportunities to develop a strong character and to have experiences that will help them grow as individuals. It is our goal, through their individual and collective experiences, that RMS students will leave middle school prepared to take on the challenges of being a young adult. In the next RMS Family Bulletin, keep an eye out for 'The Dean's List', the place where we highlight the members of our school community who embody the values of scholarship, community, and character. In the meantime, here are some details about the coming week.

You can also contact a guidance counselor for schedule information after August 31st.

  • Please Complete Emergency Forms Online: All parents or guardians must complete the RMS Student Information & Emergency Contacts form. We are trying to make it easier for parents and guardians to provide beginning of the year information. Please login to Skyward and check the family and emergency contact information that is listed. If any of the information is incorrect, please use RMS Student Information & Emergency Contacts form to make corrections. There is also information that needs to be provided to the RMS Nurse. Please complete the form by September 12th.

RIVERSIDE MIDDLE SCHOOL FAMILY BULLETIN: Updated August 22, 2021

Welcome Back 2021-2022

In a week and a half, we will be beginning a new adventure at Riverside Middle School. If there is anything that the last few years has taught us, it is that we are getting pretty good at being flexible and adapting to change quickly. While the thing we like to provide for our kids is consistency and stability, at least we know that this experience is teaching our kids that they can persevere and get through tough times. So let's turn our mindset to the excitement that comes from a new school year! Things may look a little differently than the school years of the past, but students at RMS will continue to be provided opportunities to expand their minds and to make important relationships with adults and other kids. Here are some details about the next few weeks that will help get things rolling.

Upcoming Events:

August 2021

  • 26 Thursday: Tours of RMS (10-11 am, 12-1 pm, 2-3 pm)

  • 30 Monday: Professional Development Day (Teachers Report)

  • 31 Tuesday: Professional Development Day (Teachers Report)

September 2021

  • 3 Friday: First Day of School Grade 7 (Grade 6 also attends, Grade 8 does not attend)

  • 6 Monday: Labor Day - No School

  • 7 Tuesday: All students Grades 6, 7, & 8 attend

Announcements:

  • Tours of RMS: We will hold tours of RMS for incoming students on Thursday, August 26th (10-11 am, 12-1 pm, 2-3 pm). Any student (grade 6, 7, or 8) who would like to see parts of the building they haven't see before can join us. We would like to have a sense of how many people will be showing up, so we ask students to fill out a Google form. (Students can easily access the form if they are logged into their school Google account.) For any incoming 6th grader who missed the Welcome to RMS presentation in late May, here is the video.

  • First Days of School: A few weeks ago, a phone call went out to RMS Families about the first days of school for each grade. This year, Grade 6 and Grade 8 students will come to RMS on Thursday, September 2nd. The next day, Friday, September 3rd, Grade 6 and Grade 7 students will come in (and grade 8 will have the day off). This way, we will be able to give extra attention to each of the grades and take better care of the kids who have not had a regular experience at RMS. During the two days, we will explain safety protocols and we will have extra time in the cafeteria. Our goal is to set a tone of responsibility, but also take into account the individual needs of so many kids.

  • 6th Grade Parents Welcome on September 2nd: We have traditionally invited parents of new 6th graders to RMS on the first day of school. Due to COVID protocols, we will be adjusting our plans to have an event at the beginning of the day outside in front of RMS on the first day of school, September 2nd. Parents of 6th graders are welcome to park their car and walk their child to the triangle in front of RMS. Faculty and staff members will be on hand to direct students to their homeroom teachers, who will be lined up in front of the building. At 8:00 am, there will be a brief program (along with the Pledge of Allegiance!) during which Mr. Perry and Mr. Salgueiro will greet everyone and kick off the school year. Following some brief words, parents will be able to say goodbye to their new middle schoolers, who will be led to their homeroom. Of course, if the weather is not favorable on September 2nd, we will have to adjust our plans. Messages will be sent out if that is the case.

  • Reopening Plan: Here is a link to the East Providence School Department Return to Learn Plan that was presented at the August 20th School Committee Meeting. Included is information about safety planning. Please keep in mind that our district must also follow rules and guidelines from the Rhode Island Department of Education, the Rhode Island Department of Health, and the Governor's Office and will continue to adjust plans to address needs that arise.

  • Skyward Access for Schedules and Classes Information: Final schedules and rosters will be available on August 30th. All parents and students are asked to sign into Skyward and check to see that they have access. If you do not have access to Skyward, feel free to call the RMS Main Office or send an email to our Main Office Secretary, Mrs. Marshall (kmarshall@epschoolsri.com).

  • Getting Forms Notarized: On Thursday, August 26th 3-4 pm, our friends Kimberly Nolette and Max Brandle - who are notary publics - will be at RMS to sign any forms that need to be notarized. Students who wish to participate in middle school or high school athletics and haven't already submitted the Assumption of Risk form need those forms notarized. Please share this with families of EP middle school or high school athletes. You don't want to wait until the last minute to find a notary!

  • Fall Sports at RMS: Students who are interested in participating in a sport the fall (Cross Country, Unified Cross Country, Boys Soccer, and Girls Soccer) are asked to fill out this Google Form to indicate interest. (Students must be logged into their school Google account to fill out the form.) Coaches will have the list of everyone who fills out the form and will contact students with information about the season. Here is a list of the email addresses of the coaches if you have any questions. Coach Sousa (Boys Soccer), Coach Mejia (Girls Soccer), Coach Gustafson (Cross Country). Also, all participants in RMS sports have to have the following information prior to try-outs:

  • Summer Reading: There are some great titles on this year's RMS Summer Reading list. Be sure to check out the titles and the summer reading assignment. Click here for more details.
