We finally made it. Good luck Class of 2025!

We put a resounding exclamation point on the 2020-2021 school year over the past week. Some sprinted to the finish line while others were dragged across! The weather cooperated with us just about all-week as students enjoyed Field Days, awards ceremonies, and some treats in the sun (Thanks PTSA!). It was a nice way to end a year full of challenges.

On behalf of the faculty and staff of RMS, thank you to the wonderful students and families who put in their best effort and supported each other throughout the year. The amount of good will was well-noted as it was difficult keeping it all together at times. We came together as a school community and we remained one of the safest schools in East Providence. The real stars of the show were the kids, who kept their masks on and stayed in the same classroom most of the day, and did so with little complaint. We are all looking forward to next year when we will hopefully be able to loosen some of the restrictions and return to more normal schooling.

Best wishes for and relaxing and enjoyable summer, with the hope that our kids can just be kids. We will see you at the end of August!

The Dean's List

  • Riverside Middle School's Dean of Students, Mr. Petsch updates the Dean's List on Motivational Mondays with information about the amazing efforts of RMS students, faculty, staff and families. If you would like to nominate someone for outstanding efforts in scholarship, character, service leadership, or citizenship, send an email to bpetsch@epschoolsri.com.

    • Miranda Willis: Mrs. White is proud to recommend Miranda Willis to this week’s edition of the Dean’s List. “Miranda is a model student in the 8th grade. Her hardwork and perseverance has helped her to make the honor roll each quarter this year. In addition to her great work ethic, Miranda is kind to everyone. She is the first one to help her classmates when they don't understand new material or offer to help her teachers with something.” Miranda is usually the first student to arrive at RMS and represents all of our core values daily.

    • Selena DaSilva: Eighth grader Selena DaSilva has been a rock star each year at RMS. She not only has been successful in maintaining her high grades, but she has been tutoring her two best friends since kindergarten in math (one even goes to Martin)! Selena also likes to help her cousin, a second grade teacher, with grading papers and laminating. Selena plays trumpet in our concert band and after school can be seen rockin’ the bass guitar in a music band at the Seekonk School of Rock.

    • Brayden Orellana: The 7th grade team of Mrs. Tarantelli, Ms. Braga, Mr. Sulham and Mrs. Kelley is honored to recognize their student, Brayden Orellana. Brayden is a hybrid learner who is always in class...in fact, he hasn’t had a single absence all year long! He completes all of his work on time with quality and effort that have earned him a spot on the honor roll. Always well-behaved, Brayden is very unassuming in his daily effort to be the best student that he can be.

    • Kloe Carrillo: A sixth grader, Kloe is proud to say that this year has been her best school year ever, despite having to live and work through a pandemic. She has managed to achieve high A’s in all of her classes and her teachers also tell me that Kloe scored the highest in her class on the iReady math assessment. Her favorite subject is art and she can’t wait to continue her success in the 7th grade.

    • Hope Moran and Isabel Tavares: A huge thank you goes out to Hope and Isabel for volunteering to speak at our virtual “Welcome to RMS” orientation last week for incoming 5th graders and their families. Two veterans of our morning announcement show, VTV, Hope and Isabel spoke about some of the great opportunities students will have at RMS while also showcasing our beautiful gymnasium and auditorium in the process. Hope (7th grade) and Izzy (8th grade) are naturals in front of the camera and are each very involved in numerous activities at RMS... no surprise why they were such great ambassadors for our school and role models to our incoming class.

  • Recognizing Magnificent Staff - Mark Maguire: The Dean’s List is proud to feature our band instructor, Mark Maguire. In a unique and unprecedented year of distance and hybrid learning, Mr. Maguire has still been able to successfully and safely instruct his band students while continuing to make his music program thrive! First off, Mark has been flexible, willing to adjust his schedule and even stays beyond school hours to make the magic happen. This past week, the band students hosted their first live concerts of the year...two years in the making for our incoming 6th graders. Families enjoyed a concert outdoors in our “triangle” in which each grade performed on a different evening. Year in and year out, Mark continues to produce and develop award-winning musicians and consistently scores a rating of superior at the state-wide music competition. He is respected by his colleagues, loved by current and former students and is instrumental (no pun intended) in the continuing success of our awesome Townie High School Band.

  • Parent Spotlight - Kimberly Goncalves: RMS would like to thank the support and efforts of Mrs. Kimberly Goncalves, mother of former Virtual Viking of the Week and 6th grader Ty Goncalves. Kimberly has been a huge help to our student athletes. As a notary, Kim would come to RMS (sometimes on short notice) to meet a parent and notarize the Assumption of Risk form...which is necessary before a student-athletes is eligible to participate in school sports. You may also recall that Mrs. Goncalves and Ty were responsible for organizing and providing pizza for all of our in-person 6th graders earlier in the year. Thank you for your continued involvement and support to our Viking community!

Announcements

  • Credit Recovery Plan: As part of our goal to help close gaps in learning that came about during the 2020-2021 school year, RMS is offering credit recovery to many students who failed courses in quarters 1, 2 & 3. Eligibility to take part in the program was determined by teachers who have worked with students throughout the school year. In general, students who have made an effort to participate in class and complete assignments have been given priority for credit recovery. Some students are not eligible to take part in the credit recovery program due to attendance issues during quarters 1, 2 & 3. Summer school may be available to those students. Spotlight on Academics

  • Science Takes the the Stage in April: Spotlight on Science: Below are the concepts students will be learning about in science for the 4th Quarter:

    • Grade 6: During 4th quarter the 6th grade students will continue to gain an understanding about the workings and interrelationships among Earth’s atmosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere and biosphere. Students will finish the year extending these understandings to the change Earth is undergoing due to the progressively greater effect humanity is having on the balance in nature. As we study how local conditions affect the growth of organisms, we will see that organisms which traditionally rely on their body structures and behavior adaptations to survive are being put under pressure due to the increasing pace the environment and climate is changing. Within our study of the challenges living organisms and their ecosystems have to adapt to the pace of the environment and climate change we will look at the effect of human activity. Concluding our year will be the study of the issue of burning fossil fuels as a major cause of global warming and climate change, and how strategic choices can be implemented to reduce the impacts of these human activities on the environment.

    • Grade 7: During the 4th quarter, students will explore how living things obtain what they need from their surroundings as well as how organisms interact with the living and nonliving things around them. Additionally, students will explore how humans have impacted Earth’s biodiversity and natural habitats, though geoscience processes change Earth’s surface as well. They will brainstorm ideas on how they can impact biodiversity in a positive way.

    • Grade 8: During the 4th quarter, students will focus on data analysis using; punnett squares, predator-prey graphs to support natural selection, the current human population census and per-capita consumption impacting Earth’s systems. In combination students learn the electromagnetic spectrum and how energy is reflected, absorbed or transmitted through various materials. This leads directly to global warming and engineering design.

Kim, Lindsay and Sophie Maratto: Literacy teacher, Kim Maratto, and her daughters Lindsay and Sophie lead off the Dean's List this week. EPLAC President and former RMS parent, Mary Nascimento recognize the remarkable person that Mrs. Maratto is. Check out her inspirational story in this video.

Aidan Brasil: Representing our core value of Character this week is 6th grader, Aidan Brasil. His social studies teacher, Mr. Izzi informed me that Aidan took on a leadership role while completing a class project. On his own, Aidan recognized and reached out to other students in his class to form a group to complete the task together. Mr. Izzi informed me that the group is doing a fantastic job and that he was proud of how they all were working cooperatively. Thanks, Aidan for getting that going and for keeping the group on-task!

Elska Alario: Sixth grader, Elska, joins the Dean’s List as a Virtual Viking of the Week. Her science teacher Mrs. Baccari shares, “Elska is a very responsible student. She joins our science class each day with a cheerful hello and is always ready to share out her warm up response. As a distance learner, Elska has stayed organized and on top of her classwork and maintained first honors-level grades all year. Elska often takes a leadership role in breakout rooms with her peers and helps to keep everyone focused and on task.” After school, Elska plays the violin and has been taking lessons for over three years (Mr. Maguire...I also hear she can play the trumpet!) Elska also writes and illustrates her own comic strips. Congratulations to this very talented and kind-hearted student who has a bright future ahead of her!

Lynda Nelson and Diane Wetmore: A huge thanks goes out to the dynamic duo of Mrs. Nelson and Mrs. Wetmore who took the reins to lead the RMS RICAS assessments. Preparing students and staff for the state assessment requires a great deal of time, organization and communication on their part...especially in a year that requires planning for both in-person and distance learners. Testing is halfway complete and we are off to a great start. We thank all of our staff for their dedication and flexibility, our students for working hard and giving their best effort and our parents for supporting their children and attending to the schedule.

Calvin Watts and Jean Vincent: Bus 11: Calvin is quick to say that we are just doing our job but we all know at RMS that Bus 11 goes above and beyond. We are proud to include the team of Calvin and Jean to this week’s Dean’s List. Both veterans on the buses in EP, Calvin has been driving for 21 years and Jean is in her 37th year on the road. It’s evident through their actions and demeanor that Calvin and Jean take the time to build a great rapport with all of the students on their routes. Consummate professionals, they are always quick to lend our staff a helping hand to make sure all of our students get home safely. We thank Calvin and Jean for their passion and dedication to the students of RMS and throughout East Providence. As an aside, Calvin goes back to my days coaching softball with Coach Travis at EPHS. He would always try to pick up the run for our games and would always bring the team some luck!

Brian and Payton Rutkowski: We are happy to add scholarly siblings, Brian and Payton, to this week’s Dean’s List. Now in his 8th grade year, Brian has an amazing GPA of over 99 for his three years cumulatively at RMS! He resides as the secretary for the NJHS, is captain of this year’s soccer and baseball teams and was also captain of his wrestling team last year as a 7th grader.

Seventh grader Payton is also a perennial first-honors student with a GPA high in the 90’s. She is a member of our student council and plays on the basketball team. Applying for next year’s NJHS, Payton helps tutor her peers each week in Mrs. Tarantelli’s after school mentoring group and also volunteers as a tee ball coach for the Riverside Little League. It is without question that these two well-rounded siblings are leaders, role models and tremendous assets to our Viking community!

Sebnem Ozdemir: Ms. Sunday is proud to recognize her 8th grade student, Sebnem Ozdemir. Sebnem began the year as a distance learner but for the 3rd quarter has returned in person. As a result, Sebnem improved all of her grades and has earned first honors! Ms. Sunday shares, “She has worked very hard and has proven to be an exceptional Math student who helps her peers with understanding difficult concepts. She is kind, hard-working and a great helper. She has proven to be an exceptional student and RMS Viking.” Sebnem is near perfect with a 99 average in Ms. Kenahan’s math class!

Students will collect and analyze data using Gizmos, which are online simulations that align to NGSS. Gizmos uses an inquiry-based approach to learning that has been validated by extensive research as a highly effective way to build conceptual understanding. These simulations are incorporated throughout the year, however, students will be using this software in addition to other resources to analyze and interpret data across grade levels.

If you would like to nominate someone for outstanding efforts in scholarship, character, service leadership, or citizenship, send an email to bpetsch@epschoolsri.com.

Shelby Quinn: Congratulations to our Virtual Viking of the Week, Shelby Quinn. As a sixth grader, Shelby is already making a name for herself as a scholar-athlete. She has earned highest honors each quarter with grades of 99 and 100 in all of her classes and after school, Shelby uses her talents, strong work ethic, positive attitude and dedication to excel on the cross country team. This past Friday, the team had its first meet at Barrington High School. Shelby was the first Viking to cross the finish line and finished 4th overall for the 1.5 mile race. Keep up the good work, Shelby!

Jennifer Dunay: Typically, students are nominated to the Dean’s List but this week, we have a special and well-deserved nomination from physical education teachers Mrs. Verria and Mr. Kirkutis who nominate their colleague, Ms. Dunay. Ms. Dunay demonstrates Scholarship in many ways at RMS. As a PE and Health teacher, she arrives to work early each day and is always ready to lend a hand to a colleague solving a tech question or problem. She spends hours creating organized and engaging lessons for her students using multiple tech platforms such as Peardeck, Nearpod, Word Wall, and Blocket Apps. Most recently her WIN block class created 3D organs to demonstrate an understanding of how they work. Ms. Dunay also provides timely feedback to her students while consistently reaching out to their families. Ms. Dunay is caring and compassionate. She is the ultimate professional who is unassuming in her daily stride to provide her students and her colleagues with her very best. Furthermore, while attending Rhode Island College as a Health and Exercise Science major, Ms. Dunay received the distinguished Health Award for being the top student in her graduating class. Congratulations Ms. Dunay...we are proud and lucky to have you as a part of our Viking community!

Hope arrives with warmer days

With the return of springtime weather and some good news about vaccines, we are hopeful that we are on a path toward returning to some normalcy. We have a lot of ground to make up as many of us have been thrown off by the pandemic. At RMS, kids are continuing to learn and grow. We are just past the mid-quarter mark, so it is a good time for parents to take an accounting of students' progress and grades on Skyward and to reach out to teachers with any concerns. Over the next few weeks, we will be formalizing our plans to address any learning gaps that may have come about this year - including summer school and after school tutoring. Natasha Fontaine and Madison Denton-Baker

Sixth graders Natasha Fontaine and Madison Denton-Baker earn a spot on this week’s Dean’s List. Neighbors and best friends since kindergarten, Natasha and Madison exemplify our core value of Character and inspire us all. After undergoing back surgery, Madison describes how her friend stepped up and helped her recovery in school. “Every day, Natasha would help me get in and out of the building and to my classes with all of my materials. She would hang out with me and provide company and support during our brain breaks.” Natasha was quick to point out how thoughtful her friend Madison is. “For her birthday in February, instead of a big party or presents, Madison asked her friends and family to donate food, toys and blankets to the local SPCA to help all of the animals.” The girls are a shining example of kindness and goodwill and we are proud to have them as Vikings!

Tommy Newman

This past Monday, our PTSA met for its March meeting. Joining and participating was 8th grader Thomas Newman. An honor student, Tommy’s teachers continuously speak of how hard-working, polite and dedicated he is to their classes. Tommy always gives 100% to everything that he does and we thank him for assuming a leadership role at our PTSA meeting. Students, perhaps, are one of the most important voices of our school and we hope that Tommy will inspire more students to speak up, join and provide their valuable input to help make RMS the best school it can be! Thanks for being the The “S” in our “PTSA, Tommy and for being the Virtual Viking of the Week!

Jacob Couto

7th grader, Jacob Couto was nominated by his science teacher, Mrs. Tarantelli, who writes, “This week I would like to recognize Jacob Couto. Jacob is always polite, says hello and asks how my day is going. He never misses class and I know he is paying attention because he asks and answers questions. He never leaves the Google Meet without saying "Have a great day!" This past Wednesday when we were working on the Survey Works Survey, one of my students didn't have that Google Classroom since he was new to the school. Jacob immediately put the link into the chat and gave the student the code. He is always helpful and a joy to have in class. Jacob’s parents are also very proud of him and describe how he is thoughtful, an excellent sibling and huge help around the house! Keep up the good work, Jacob.

Ms. Viveiros' Class

Making the Dean’s list this week are the students in Ms. Viveiros’s class who design and decorate “Kindness Hearts'' to help spread and promote kindness throughout the building. When a student or staff member receives a heart for showing an act of kindness, they head down to Ms. Viveiros’s room to pick out a prize in recognition of their good deed. A huge thanks goes out to Karl Sweeney Jr. for donating the hearts and for his ongoing support to students and families of Riverside Middle School.

Eighth grader Kathryn Patalano was one of the first students to receive a heart and Viking Award! Students and teachers frequently speak of how kind-hearted, thoughtful and generous Katie is. She is a member of the National Junior Honor Society and volunteers as a tutor in our after school homework club. Katie is active on the cross country and track teams and is a wonderful peer mentor on our unified basketball team. She plays clarinet in the school band, donates her own money to various school-sponsored charities and can often be seen setting and cleaning up for lunch in her pod. Katie’s kindness spreads outside of school, as well. A Girl Scout since the age of five, Katie is now a Cadette who has also started her own sewing business called Katie Cat’s Creations where she sews patches on the Girl Scout uniforms for all of the troops!

  • Social Studies: Students in 6th grade Geography are currently learning about Africa. Did you know that Africa is the second largest continent in the world! In fact, Africa is over three times larger than the United States of America. In addition to its stark and untamed beauty, Africa contains huge mountains, such as the breathtaking Mt. Kilimanjaro, lush savannas, tropical rainforests, three enormous deserts, and the longest river in the world. Students are reading, researching, and investigating the geography, culture, and history of Africa. Students will be completing a project on an African country of their choice to wrap up this unit. This comprehensive research project is designed to give students the opportunity to work and learn how to work collaboratively with their classmates with a common goal in mind. Mr. Izzi and Mrs. Barnowski are excited to dive into this project with their students.

Nazarae will also begin her 3rd season on the cross country team next week.

A star in the classroom, Abigail consistently earns first honors but she also excels after school, as well. Abigail competes on the RMS Cross Country and Track teams and volunteers to help support her classmates each week as a member of Mrs. Tarantelli’s Peer Tutor group. Outside of school, Abigail remains active. She competitively swims, plays tennis and furthers her own learning by taking classes at the Squared School Academy of Mathematics.

  • Caelen Oliver: A 6th grade honor student, Caelen Oliver, not only joins the Dean's List, but he was awarded the Prudential Spirit of Community award, the nation's largest youth recognition program based exclusively on volunteer community service. Caelen earned all A's last quarter and he was recognized by Prudential for his service to the community, including raising money for Shriners Hospitals for Children. Nice work Caelen!

  • Jayden Cabral-Acevedo: Representing our core value of Character is Jayden Cabral-Acevedo. Jayden demonstrated his maturity as an 8th grader and really stepped up as a leader. When a fellow classmate was having a rough day, Jayden recognized this and used his past experiences and words to help get that student back on track and feeling positive again. As we all are being tested during these difficult times, it’s a breath of fresh air to witness students helping one another out. Jayden’s awareness and compassion were instrumental and he will bring these skills to the Unified Basketball Team next week.

  • Matthew Capaldo: Seventh grader Matt Capaldo is recognized for Scholarship this week. To complete a project about human rights in Mrs. McCarthy's social studies class, Matt designed a tee shirt using his Cricut machine. His shirt was such a big hit, Matt is now being asked to create more shirts for other staff members. All of his teachers wanted to recognize how hard Matt has been working in their classes this quarter. Keep up the good work, Matt!

  • Max Carroll: Last month, Ms. Foster and Mr. Salgueiro headed our February Fitness Club in which students and staff met both virtually and in person after school to help get into shape, beat the winter blues and participate in some fun exercise activities. Participants who completed all of their goals were entered into a raffle and we would like to recognize our lucky winner, Anthony “Max” Carroll, who won an Amazon gift card for his excellent work and involvement in the club.

  • Ty Gonsalves: Our Virtual Viking is 6th grader, Ty G! Ty was nominated by his teachers for his outstanding grades, awesome participation and excellent attitude in his virtual classes! Prior to vacation, Ty wanted to connect and do something nice for his fellow in-person 6th graders so he and his mom helped to organize and provide hot pizza for everyone for lunch. After school, Ty helps tutor his friends in math and has also been playing soccer for several years!

  • Avery Butler & Masie Flynn: Sixth graders, Avery and Maisie have stepped up as leaders among their peers. Before the 2nd semester began, RMS hosted informational Google Meets for all distance learners who would soon be returning to in-person learning. Avery and Maisie led the 6th grade Meet, sharing their experiences and eloquently answering questions that incoming students had about returning to school. Avery and Maisie were well-spoken, professional, gracious and a huge help to their peers. Thanks for stepping up and for being such awesome Vikings!

  • Kaia Greene: Kaia was nominated by her 6th grade teacher, Mrs. Fillion, who shares, “Kaia is one of the nicest, most hard-working & responsible students I know. She is always helpful, respectful, hardworking and kind. She is an absolute pleasure to know!” Kaia’s hard work has paid off as she achieved honors for the first semester!

  • Abby Leddy: A huge thanks goes out to our Student Council, led by Ms. Braga and 8th grader, Abby L. Through their efforts, RMS made and delivered Valentine cards and some joy to the residents and staff of Waterview Villa Rehabilitation and Health Care Center. In addition to making the cards, the Student Council also sponsored a “Red Out” event for our Heart-Healthy Friday which raised over $125 for the American Heart Association. We would like to thank Ms. Braga and the Student Council for their leadership, generosity and community involvement!

  • Mrs. Tarantelli: RMS would also like to recognize Mrs. Tarantelli and several of her students who have stepped up as leaders this past quarter. Mrs. Tarantelli organized a peer tutoring club that meets weekly after school. Her group offers both academic and organizational support for her students. Volunteers meet virtually in breakout rooms after school to provide 1:1 help with assignments, study skills and much more! A huge thanks goes out to the following 7th grade students who all volunteer as tutors each week: Kyra Diorio, Abby Ellison, Aubrey Facteau, Raphael Ferreira, Hope Moran, Annabelle Moore, Payton Rutkowski, Sophia Santos and Alistair Soderlund. Initially, Mrs. Tarantelli would contact and arrange all of the groupings herself but now, due to her leadership and mentoring, the student volunteers are taking on that role themselves by reaching out to their peers who may need some extra help or time and then by helping to plan the tutoring sessions! The program has been very successful. For example, Mrs. Tarantelli would like to acknowledge one of her students, Jamaree Enos, who has put in the effort, joined every session and as a result, has seen a huge improvement in all of his grades.

  • Mrs. Kelley: Mrs. Kelley’s after school cooking club met virtually for the first time this past week and was a huge success! She and her students baked delicious lemon-blueberry muffins together after school. We would like to thank Mrs. Kelley for her dedication and leadership. She not only organized the club, but provides all of the ingredients and even went out and delivered them to our distance learners. Thanks for stepping up and we can’t wait to see what the group makes next!

He also updated the answers in the chat in case one of his peers missed it. He is an utter joy to have in class. He is a true scholar.” Daniel shows his spirit every week by participating in our Townie Tuesday, Bow Tie Thursday and every spirit event we have at RMS. Keep up the great work, Daniel!

Spotlight on Scholarship

  • From the ELA Department: As William Shakespeare once wrote, “All the world’s a stage.” This statement is certainly true in Ms. Potts' and Ms. French's 8th grade English classes as students read Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett’s drama “The Diary of Anne Frank.” This play tells the true story of a young Jewish girl and her family who hid from the Nazis during the Holocaust. Students will undoubtedly find parallels between Anne’s experience living in hiding and their own as they navigate living in a pandemic. As students take on the roles of different characters to read aloud the play, we are reminded that even in these unprecedented times of distance learning, we can remember and learn from the past.

  • From the Guidance Department: The RMS School Counseling Office has been working to implement the State Department's Prepare RI Initiative of Individual Learning Plans. The Individual Learning Plan or ILP, is a tool that students begin in sixth grade and continue with until high school graduation. The purpose is for students to have a voice and decision-making ability in their individual academic planning through the use of the platform Xello. Every quarter, the school counselors have been working diligently to ensure students are creating academic, career, and social emotional SMART goals as well as exploring potential career interests and participating in custom-made lessons for each grade level. As we are now in the month of January, eighth grade students will soon be able to choose their high school courses for their 9th grade year at EPHS. This includes a virtual tour of the Career Tech Center too! More information will be forthcoming, and updates will be made and communicated to the school community.

A visit from the big man, Math teacher in holiday sweaters, 6th graders at one of our best photo spots, Some holiday fun

December 6, 2020

We made it to the Holidays!

The week before our Holiday vacation is finally here. There are so many things that we could talk about as we get ready for a well-earned break. Usually at the end of December, we review the year and reflect upon our successes and challenges. This year, perhaps we should just focus on the future! However, that might imply that everything was negative this year. So let's just say that we have stuck together as a school community and we learned a lot about how to exist in the in-person and distance learning environments. We will use these lessons to create an even better experience for our kids in 2021. We will get past any difficulties and move on!

On behalf of Mr. Salgueiro, Mr. Petsch, Officer Tammy, and the Faculty & Staff of Riverside Middle School, I wish you a most joyous Holiday Season, best wishes for the New Year, and good health for you and your family. Recently, a Rhode Island minor was a victim of identity theft after receiving positive COVID-19 results and relaying personal information during a phone conversation with a scammer posing as a contact tracer with the RI Department of Health. Besides your date of birth, The RI Department of Health will never require you provide any other personal identifying information that could cause fraud or deception. We are learning more and more every day

We learned a lot in the first quarter about working in the hybrid learning environment. We have had some successes as a number of students made the Honor Roll for the 1st Quarter. For others, the distance learning experience has been a real challenge. This week, we will have parent-teacher conferences - a step toward getting all students what they need to be successful. As always, students and parents are encouraged to reach out to teachers and guidance counselors for support as this is a new experience for everyone and we are learning together how to make it work for our kids. Outside of the classroom, the girls also stay involved by participating in lacrosse, cross country, track and student council.

Kyra makes an extra effort each day to say hello and frequently volunteers in class. All of her teachers say that Kyra is an outstanding young lady and a pleasure to have virtually in class! Department Coordinator, Mrs. Hammons, recognizes Jaeden Y. for being an exemplary distance learning student in her English class. Jaeden participates frequently, collaborates with others, and communicates proactively with questions. We are marching toward another milestone

Over the past nine months, it seems like every week we hit new milestones - some positive and some negative - that affect our lives in profound ways. At RMS, we are focusing on safety and learning more each day about how to keep everyone engaged in education. It hasn't been easy, but we are figuring it out. With another milestone behind us, we will be turning our attention to the end of the first quarter. Unlike last year during distance learning, when students received grades of either 60, 80, or 100, this year, we are using a traditional grading system. It's important that students and parents log into Skyward and keep an eye on grades and assignments and keep on top of student progress. Contact teachers via email with questions or concerns! Here is some information about things happening over the next few weeks.

  • Updated Information on COVID and Travel: Here is a message from Superintendent, Kathryn Crowley regarding travel at the holidays.

With the upcoming Thanksgiving Break right around the corner, I write to remind you of the current RIDOH rules concerning out of state travel and quarantine requirements when you return to our state. Based on RIDOH requirements if you are a Rhode Island resident who has been in one of these states with a COVID-19 positivity rate higher than 5%, you must quarantine for 14 days and self-monitor for symptoms.

      • As an exception, you may provide proof of a negative test for COVID-19 that was taken within the 72 hours prior to arrival in Rhode Island. Quarantining for 14 days is always preferred over relying on a negative test result as quarantining is the best way to limit the possibility of spreading COVID-19.

      • If you are a returning Rhode Island resident, you can self-schedule an asymptomatic test at a community-based testing location listed below or through portal.ri.gov. Returning residents who schedule an appointment through portal.ri.gov will not be billed for asymptomatic testing.

      • It might take several days to receive test results . You must quarantine while waiting for a negative test result.

      • If you receive a test during your quarantine in Rhode Island and get a negative result, you can stop quarantining. However, you still need to self-monitor for symptoms of COVID-19 for 14 days, wear a mask any time you’re near people who don’t live with you, and follow physical distancing guidelines.

      • If you return to Rhode Island and begin to experience symptoms of COVID-19, contact your primary care provider or a Respiratory Clinic to schedule a test.

These rules apply to you and any member of your family who travel with you.

As the pandemic worsens, we can expect our Governor to place additional restrictions on us. So, before you make travel plans and as soon as you return to our state please review the most up to date information as well as answers to questions by accessing https://health.ri.gov/covid/travel/ .

Older Announcements:

  • COVID-19 Information for Families: Here is a link to a document from the Reopening RI Plan that explains what happens if my child has symptoms at home or gets sick in school. The document answers a number of questions related to the current health crisis.

  • Distance Learning Expectations: Here are some reminders for families about our as we do our best to support the students of East Providence with online instructional opportunities.

  • Students are expected to be online during scheduled classes and on time to class.

  • Parents/guardians should be mindful about what family activities would potentially be heard/seen during the students’ use of video conferencing. This is a great tool to keep students connected, but please have your students use these tools somewhere near enough to monitor, yet private enough to concentrate on their work.

  • Please have students dress appropriately when video conferencing and make sure that there are no distracting materials or backgrounds.

  • Students/parents/guardians, should not take photos, screenshots, or record any video or audio from these class sessions. This is a violation of our EAST PROVIDENCE PUBLIC SCHOOLS ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY

  • The tools we use are vetted by our faculty and administrators for data privacy and safety. We will be adding new tools as needed and are mindful of the important aspect of keeping students and student data safe.

  • Students should be using a district-issued Chromebook. If you do not have one please contact the school office.

  • Please have Chromebooks charged and secured somewhere safe during sleeping hours. Go Guardian is installed on all district computers and monitors use on district devices at all times.

  • If the assigned Chromebook is not working properly (broken keyboard, microphone, etc.) please report it immediately to the school so it can be exchanged for a functioning device.

  • Parents/guardians should refrain from talking with the teacher during a Google Meet. Appointments may be scheduled for non-academic hours with your child’s teacher.

  • Lastly, the same rules of conduct and behavior will apply when a student is online as apply in the classroom. If you have questions or concerns about your student’s use of online tools, please contact your school Principal. If you are experiencing technical issues please contact our IT Team at 401 383-2224 x4323. We appreciate your support during this challenging time and we are working very hard to keep our students engaged and supported.Emergency Information (updated): Thank you to the parents and guardians who took the time to update emergency information. We just received word that parents now have the ability to update emergency contacts themselves in Skyward. If you don't want to wait for it to be updated by the RMS secretaries, you can Login to your Skyward account and follow these directions and make the changes yourself. It is a good idea to check a student's emergency contacts every year as relationships sometimes change and addresses and phone numbers are updated.

We are working to keep everyone engaged

Now that we have our routines down and we are getting accustomed to our schedule, it's time to focus on keeping everyone engaged. During our Professional Development Day last Monday, RMS teachers examined our current situation and discussed ways that we can keep kids in the school and at home engaged in their education. Our goal is to make the best of our situation and figure out ways to keep a steady flow of learning and experiences for kids as the year progresses. We will do these in the safest ways possible. Keep an eye out for information about some fun events that will be coming up in the next few weeks and also be sure to check out the Distance Learning Expectations at the bottom of this week's announcements.

  • Recognizing Marvelous Students (& Staff): Each week, Mr. Petsch is pleased to recognize the awesome contributions to our school by students, staff member, and even parents!

    • This week, 8th Grade English teacher Ms French would like to recognize two of her students, Arijah and Daisha, for being Rockstars! Arijah utilizes office hours each week to catch up on his assignments. He takes advantage of this time to ask his teachers questions and for extra help. Daisha is the undefeated champion and #1 scorer on all of Ms French’s review games for Kahoot and Quizlet Live! She always comes to class prepared, is a model student and will put her undefeated record on the line again this week! Congratulations to both students as their hard work (both distance and in person) is paying off.

    • PE teachers, Mr. Kirkutis and Mr. Mello are proud to recognize their first period class in room 212. You would think that meeting each day from 7:45am to 8:40am would pose a challenge for any physical activity but not for this group. Mr. K. reports that his hybrid class is energetic, eager to learn and has had perfect attendance each day. Furthermore, all of the distance students turn on their cameras so Mr. K. and Mr. Mello can see their physical participation and smiles each day. Even on our distance day, “Workout Wednesday” has become a hit which fosters great participation and enthusiasm from the class.

  • Pink Out for Breast Cancer Awareness: Our Student Council, under the leadership of Ms Braga, has helped to organize our Pink Out Days and collected $100 this past week for Breast Cancer Awareness!

  • Socktober Sock Collection Update: We are pleased to announce that RMS collected nearly 2000 pairs of socks during our Socktober collection! Congratulations to the students in Room 201 for for leading the way with 548 pairs of socks. • Students congregating at the REC after school: We have noticed that more students than usual have been hanging out at the Riverside Rec (the city property behind RMS) after school. Older kids have been there too. We have made announcements to students that it is not a good idea to be congregating and it's best to go straight home after school. Parents are asked to please speak to their kids about help us out with this.

We appreciate your support during this challenging time and we are working very hard to keep our students engaged and supported.

October 11, 2020

We're just about midway through the quarter

We are definitely settling into the school year. Most distance learning students have been logging in consistently from home and our in-person learners have their routines down at RMS. Teachers have reported that they are getting comfortable with hybrid teaching and everyday they are adding a new strategy to their playbook. It certainly is a different kind of school-year. At this point of the quarter, students are well into assignments, tests, and quizzes. Parents and students are encouraged to check the Skyward grade book and Google Classroom frequently to check on academic progress. Please reach out directly to a teacher if there are concerns about assignments or grades. Mr. Pond, the guidance counselor for students in Grades 6 & 7, and Dr. Pepin, the Grade 8 guidance counselor can provide help too.

One of our biggest challenges this year is keeping up a strong school culture that we have enjoyed at RMS for many years. We are working to find ways to engage our kids who are distance learning and even our in-person students have had to adjust to a school that is just not the same as the one they have enjoyed. The good news is that everyone has been patient and helpful as we have worked to figure this all out. With that said, here are some details about things that are coming up at RMS over the next few weeks.

Last year, with the help of our former “Crazy Sock Lady,” Mrs. Alves, RMS donated over 1,000 pairs of socks to local shelters. This year’s Socktober contest is underway and each pod has a donation box in their classroom to collect new pairs of socks. After one week, the 6th grade pod in room 213 leads the way with the most donations. The pod with the most socks collected by the end of school on Friday, October 23, will win a “SURPRIZE” the following week. Please show your school spirit, and generosity, by participating and donating to this necessary and great cause!

RMS Morning Announcements
We are getting our morning routines down.

September 27, 2020

It's time to turn our attention to instruction

We have learned how to do a a lot of new things in just a few short weeks of school. Students at RMS have learned how to maneuver through the hallways, while kids at home have had to adapt to a new schedule and technology. Parents have had to adjust their schedules in order to fill out the Daily Wellness For, while teachers have worked to address the needs of kids in front of them and on their computer screens. In all, a lot of people have had to cooperate in order to make things function. As a school community, we are certainly a work-in-progress, but we are making strides every day. Now that we have many new routines down, we need to turn our attention to curriculum and instruction. Without question, our first priority is safety, but because everyone has taken on so much responsibility, we are able to much more emphasis on curriculum and instruction. Here are some details about the coming week .

      • Grades 6 & 8 and special populations in-person learning, Grade 7 (all students) distance learning

Announcements:

  • Daily Wellness Form: Parents and guardians of in-person students are reminded that EVERY DAY the Wellness Form must be filled out in Skyward by 7:15 AM. This was an issue last week as many kids had to wait outside of RMS because the check wasn't completed or it was done late. (We need a few minutes to run off copies in the morning, so it really needs to be done by 7:15 AM.) Please make this part of your morning routine. We realize it is another thing to add to what can be stressful mornings. However, it is really important that it be done so we can begin our day on time!

  • iReady Diagnostic Assessments: We use a program called iReady to help us assess our students progress in math and ELA. The diagnostic assessment will be administered this week. STUDENTS AT RMS WILL NEED HEADPHONES FOR TESTING. Parents and families are asked to encourage their children to do their best on the test and to help them get organized and find a quiet space to take the assessment. Please support your child (but do not help them with the answers) and celebrate your child’s effort once they have completed their assessment. Check out this website to learn more about the iReady program and how we use it to help our kids improve their math and ELA skills. This year, our beginning of year diagnostic assessments will take place on the following days:

      • Monday, September 28: Grades 6 & 7 - ELA (Periods 3 & 4)

      • Tuesday, September 29: Grades 6 & 7 - Math (Periods 1 & 2)

      • Thursday. October 1: Grade 8 - ELA (Periods 3 & 4)

      • Friday, October 2: Grade 8 - Math (Periods 1 & 2)

  • Meet the Teachers Night: This year, teaching teams and some individual teachers will be hosting Meet the Teachers Night via Google Meet. on Monday, September 28th 6:00 -7:30 PM. We wanted a way to have parents actually join the meeting so each teaching team will be host a Google Meet USING THE STUDENTS' GOOGLE ACCOUNT. This is the only way that we could provide parents an opportunity to participate fully and also have the security that we need to make it work. Teachers have been sending out invitations to parents and students via email. Remember that in order to participate in the Meet the Teachers Night Google Meet, YOU MUST BE LOGGED IN TO A STUDENT GOOGLE ACCOUNT. This does not have to be done on a school Chromebook. A parent can join from any computer, tablet, or smart phone that has access to Google. Here are a few things to keep in mind as you join the meeting. (Students know how to do these things, so ask them if you need help!)

      • Please mute your microphone when you join the Google Meet. Turn off your camera if you like.

      • Teachers will provide a presentation and will explain how they will be able to answer questions from parents. Teachers may not be using the chat feature in Google Meet.

      • If you have not received information from the team, please contact your child's teachers via email.

  • Emergency Contact Form: Usually at the beginning of the year, we send home an emergency contact form that parents fill out. This year, parents are asked to fill out a Google Form. Parents are asked to fill out this information right away since it is more important than ever that we are able to get in touch with parents and guardians quickly. Click here for the Emergency Contact Form.

  • Dismissing Students from RMS: If a parent needs to dismiss a students during the school day, please send a message to Mrs. Mancinho (rmancinho@epschoolsri.com) with details about when the student needs to be dismissed and by whom. Remember that anyone dismissing a student needs to be on the Emergency Contact Form and must show a photo ID.

  • Attendance Questions: If you have questions about attendance in a particular class (as indicated in Skyward), please contact the teacher of the class directly via email. Please remember that it is important for students learning at home to login to their Google Meets at their scheduled starting time.

  • Screen-Lite Wednesday: On Wednesdays, all students learn from home. The schedule on Wednesdays is shortened in order to give students time away from screens. They will be meeting with all of their teachers on Wednesdays and teachers will also hold 'office hours' so that students can get individualized attention. If you have any questions about your child's schedule or work in an individual class, please reach out directly to a teacher via email. Here is the schedule for Screen-Lite Wednesday: Period 1: 8:00-8:30 am, Period 2: 8:30-9:00 am, Period 3: 9:00-9:30 am, Period 4: 9:30-10:00 am, Period 5: 10:00-10:30 am, Period 6: 10:30-11:00 am, Break: 11:00-11:45 am, Office Hours (by Team): 12:00-1:00 pm

We promised our 8th Graders that we would put them in the RMS Family Bulletin!

September 20, 2020

We're Ready for Week 2

Despite a few issues, we had a fairly smooth start to the 2020-2021 school year. Thank you so much to everyone in our school community - including students, parents, and teachers - who have worked so hard to try something new and difficult. The kids have really been cooperative and patient as we have worked out the details. We are hopeful that next week we will be able to continue to smooth everything out. In a week, we will have a different perspective. (There will be additional information added to this bulletin before the end of the weekend.)

  • A Note About Attendance: This year, teachers will be recording attendance in Skyward for every class. However, the first period attendance is the most important because it is the information that we are required to report to the Rhode Island Department of Education. As a result, a few different scenarios have brought up some questions about the way that attendance is recorded. First, students who are learning at home - whether they are our full-time distance learning students or in-person students who are learning from home on Wednesdays - are recorded as either L (distance learning) or A for absent. It is important to note that in-person learning students who are absent from RMS (even if they are in a class Google Meet while at home) have to be recorded as absent. Also, it is important that distance learning students login to their Google Meets within 5 minutes of their scheduled starting time.

      • Office Hours (by Team): 12:00-1:00 pm

  • Lunch Pick Up for Distance Learning Students: Lunches will be available for all students doing distance learning beginning Monday. The pick up time for RMS will be 8:00-8:30 am. Parents will need to fill out this form to be able to pick up lunches after this week. All children in the house 18 and under can receive a free lunch. Meals can be picked up at any site. Lunches will be free until December 2020 and parents should still fill out the free/reduced lunch form.

  • Emergency Contact Form: Usually at the beginning of the year, we send home an emergency contact form that parents fill out. This year, parents are asked to fill out a Google Form. September 13, 2020

Welcome back to RMS!

Tomorrow we will begin a new adventure. There are a lot of details to discuss, so let's get right into it.

Upcoming Events:

September 2020

    • 14-18 Monday-Friday: ORIENTATION WEEK - UPDATED - See the description below

    • 21 Monday: Grade 6, 7 & 8 All students both Distance Learning & In-Person. (Some calendars that went out list this as a Professional Development day. It is not.)

    • 28 Monday: Meet the Teachers Night 6:00-7:30 PM.

Announcements:

  • Orientation Week: The purpose of Orientation Week is to allow for the safest return to school for everyone who will be inside RMS. It is also an opportunity for students and teachers to acclimate to hybrid-learning - something we have never done before - by which students at home and at RMS will be in the same class at the same time. The Orientation Week schedule is more complex than usual, so let's break it down by grade. Remember that kids who are coming to RMS are know as "in-person" students and kids who are learning at home are "distance learning" students. (As you know, on Wednesdays, all students will be learning from home).

        • GRADE 6

          • On Monday, just IN-PERSON students will be meeting with teachers at RMS. DISTANCE LEARNING students will not be logging in on Monday. This is to allow IN-PERSON 6th graders and teachers a day at RMS to get used to protocols and procedures.

          • On Tuesday, just DISTANCE LEARNING students will be meeting with their teachers by logging into a Google Meet shared by their teachers via Google Classroom. IN-PERSON students will not be logging in from home, but their teachers will give them homework assignments to complete.

          • On Wednesday, ALL STUDENTS stay at home and login to a Google Meet shared by their teachers in Google Classroom. They will follow the regular daily schedule.

          • On Thursday, IN-PERSON students will come to RMS and DISTANCE LEARNING students will login to a Google Meet shared by their teachers. This is the first day of full hybrid learning (both IN-PERSON and DISTANCE LEARNING at the same time) for Grade 6. Remember that students will follow a schedule.

          • Friday is the same as Thursday.

          • Monday, September 21st is NOT A PROFESSIONAL DAY as was indicated in some calendars that were sent out. It will be a regular day in which IN-PERSON students will come to RMS and DISTANCE LEARNING students will login from home.

  • GRADE 7

      • On Monday, 7th graders do not have school

      • On Tuesday, just IN-PERSON 7th graders will be meeting with teachers at RMS. The DISTANCE LEARNING students will not be logging in on Tuesday. This is to allow IN-PERSON 7th graders and teachers a day at RMS to get used to protocols and procedures.

      • On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, ALL 7TH GRADE STUDENTS stay at home and login to a Google Meet shared by their teachers in Google Classroom. They will follow the regular daily schedule.

    • STUDENTS IN SPECIAL PROGRAMS

        • Thursday, September 17, Students in the Life Skills, Intensive Resource, and Connections Programs begin both IN-PERSON and DISTANCE LEARNING. Teachers will be reaching out to parents and students to make sure they are prepared for the school year.

  • Daily Wellness Check: This is super important! To ensure the safety of everyone at school, parents of students who will be returning to school in-person in September will need to check off a health screening form in Skyward each morning before school. Here are the directions. After you do it once, it will be easy. It is just going to be a matter of making a part of your daily routine! Students whose parents have not completed this in the morning will be delayed coming into RMS.

  • Schedules and Classes Information Update: Schedules have been updated in Skyward by Guidance Counselors, Mrs. Pepin (kpepin@epschoolsri.com) and Mr. Pond (dpond@epschoolsri.com). Please note that adjustments are still being made and there may be some changes to individual student schedules. We are working hard to get all issues cleaned up by the first day for each grade. If you are not able to login to Skyward, use the "Forgot your Login/Password" link at the Skyward login screen. If you still have difficulty, send an email to Mrs. Mancinho (rmancinho@epschoolsri.com) for information about logging in.

  • Procedures for Coming to RMS: The first day of school for IN-PERSON 6th graders is Monday. 7th graders come Tuesday, and 8th graders come Thursday. When students arrive at RMS - either by bus, being dropped-off, or walking - they will be greeted by faculty and staff members who will hand them a piece of paper on which will be written their POD number. Students will be directed to the grassy area (the triangle) in front of the school where teachers will be standing with signs that indicate the specific PODS. Students will walk to their POD area and check in with the teacher. At around 7:55, we will begin to bring students into the building in a safe manner. Once we are all in the building, we will begin our orientations.

  • Distance Learning Students: Students should be logging into their Google accounts. Teachers have been sending invites for Google Classroom. That is where you will find links to the Google Meets that will be used for distance learning. For any student who needs a Google account password reset, a parent must send an email to Mrs. Maninho (rmancinho@epschoolsri.com) from an email account that is listed in Skyward. Once the password is reset, directions will be sent.

  • COVID-19 Testing Sites: The Rhode Island Department of Health has created COVID-19 testing sites throughout the state for only PreK-12 students and staff. The East Providence area location is at the East Providence Senior Center at 610 Waterman Ave. across from EPHS. It is open Monday - Saturday 9 am - 5 pm

  • Emergency Contact Form: Usually at the beginning of the year, we send home an emergency contact form that parents fill out. This year, we will be sharing a Google Form via email. Parents are asked to fill out this information right away since it is more important than ever that we are able to get in touch with parents and guardians quickly. Keep an eye out for the link via email.

  • Breakfast and Lunch: Until (at least) December, breakfasts and lunches will be provided for all students in the East Providence schools. Meals will be delivered to classrooms. For distance learning students, meals will be available at the following locations and times for pick up. All children in a home 18 and under can receive a free lunch. Meals can be picked up at any site. Lunches will be free until December 2020. Parents should still fill out the free/reduced lunch form.

      • East Providence High School: 8:00-8:45

      • Riverside Middle School: 8:00-8:30

      • All Elementary Schools: 9:30-10:00

  • Daily Schedule: Students at RMS and at home will follow a daily schedule. Here are the times and periods.

      • Period 1: 7:45 – 8:40 (55 min)

      • Period 2: 8:40 – 9:35 (55 min)

      • Period 4: 10:30 – 11:25 (55 min)

      • Period 5: 11:25-12:35 (70 min)

          • Lunch A (Grade 6): 11:25-11:45

          • Lunch B Grade 7&8: 12:15-12:35

      • Period 6: 12:35 – 1:30 (55 min)

  • Screen-Lite Wednesday: The middle schools in East Providence will take on Screen-Light Wednesdays this year. THIS WILL START ON SEPTEMBER 23rd. All students (Grades 6-8) will be at home distance learning on Wednesdays, so that RMS can be deep-cleaned. We know that all kids are spending a lot of time on screens these days, so we will use this opportunity to shorten class periods and encourage kids to shut down their devices and engage in some non-screen activities in the middle of the week. We are hopeful that this will help keep kids better balanced during the rest of the week. In general, classes will be done by 11:00 am and then teachers will have 'office hours' for students who need a check-in. The hope is that we can provide some time away from screens and reset for a productive Thursday and Friday. Here is the schedule for Screen-Lite Wednesdays:

      • Period 1: 8:00-8:30 am

      • Period 2: 8:30-9:00 am

      • Period 3: 9:00-9:30 am

      • Period 4: 9:30-10:00 am

      • Period 5: 10:00-10:30 am

      • Period 6: 10:30-11:00 am

      • Break: 11:00-11:45 am

      • Office Hours (by Team): 12:00-1:00 pm

  • Chromebooks: In-person students who had school-issued Chromebooks last year should bring them to school charged on their first day. In-person students who were not issued a Chromebook last year will be assigned one on the first day back at RMS. Distance learning students who missed the pick up date should contact Mrs. Costa (gcosta@epschoolsri.com) to arrange a pick-up.

  • School Supplies List: This year, we are providing a general suggested supply list. Please know that this is not a required list, but a lot of kids enjoy getting ready for the school year with new supplies. Individual teachers may also have a supply request list. We will have some supplies available, but we will not be sharing. Also, we will not be using lockers this year, so students will need to carry their supplies with them.

      • headphones or earbuds

      • two-pocket folders

      • pencils

      • pens

      • erasers

      • pencil sharpener

      • highlighter

      • calculator (4-function)

      • dry-erase marker

      • colored pencils

  • Bus Routes: Bus guidelines and routes have been posted under Transportation on the East Providence School District website (https://epschoolsri.org/parents). Routes will also be published in the East Providence Post this week.

  • Middle School Sports: All sports have been postponed until later in the year. An announcement will be made when more information is known about a safe return to the fields and courts.

  • Meet the Teachers Night Video Meetings: This year, our Meet the Teachers Night will be via video presentation on Monday, September 28 (6:00-7:30 pm). Teaching Teams will set up meetings on Google Meets and parents will be able to join and use a form to ask questions. More information will be provided in an upcoming RMS Family Bulletin.

  • A Note on Mask Wearing: Students and staff are required to wear masks throughout the school day. The purpose is to keep everyone safe within the school. Please discuss this with your child and practice wearing a mask for longer periods of time, because it does take some time to get used to wearing a mask. There will be opportunities during the day for mask breaks and teachers will be taking students outside at different times during the day.

  • Daily and Period Attendance: One of the biggest differences between distance learning last year and our plan this year is that students will follow a daily schedule. Attendance will be taken each day, each period during the first five minutes of class. This is for in person and distance learning students. It will be the student's responsibility to login and stay in that class as if they are in school.

Announcements:

  • Student Groupings and Classes: This year, we will be referring to students' classes as 'pods'. These pods will include kids who are coming into RMS for in-person learning and those who will be distance-learning. In general, the pods have 20-23 students. Students will follow a regular schedule of classes everyday whether they are in-person or distance learning. Teachers will be instructing from the classrooms. Students at home and in-person will follow along with the lesson at the same time and will engage the same learning activities. Of course, there is going to be a learning curve as we all figure out how to do this best. The good news is that we had a lot of experience with distance learning last year, and we should be up-to-speed within a few weeks.

  • Schedules and Classes Information: Now that we have a plan for grouping students in pods and for providing instruction, we have the task of putting together our pods. We had our schedules completed in June, but we had to adjust those because of the shortened school day (7:45 am - 1:30 pm). Students will be taking 6 classes this year (compared to the usual 7) and we have to create pods that address a number of programs and student needs. Therefore, it will be a few weeks before we are able to share schedules. As soon as they are prepared, we will send out an announcement.

  • Distance Learning Requests: Distance learning requests for the 2020-2021 school year were submitted by Friday, August 7th. If you have questions or concerns about distance or in-person learning that haven't been answered in this bulletin, feel free to contact Mr. Perry.

  • Yearbook Pick Up Event: Our yearbooks have arrived! We will have a pick up event on Wednesday, September 2nd 9:30 am-12:30 pm and 5:00 pm-6:00 pm. Parents are asked to drive around the circle on the right side of the school where a member of the RMS faculty will be there to pass out the yearbooks. Our former 8th graders will also receive other items like awards from the end of the year!

  • Parent Information Sessions: Mr. Perry and Mr. Salgueiro (and some members of the RMS faculty & staff) will be holding parent information meetings on Tuesday, September 8 (grade 6) and Wednesday, September 9 (grades 7 & 8) via video. A form will be available so that parents can ask questions during the meetings. Links will be shared soon.

  • Chromebooks: Students who were issued a Chromebook last school year will keep their device this year. For those students who did not use a school Chromebook last year, there will be a pick-up at RMS on Thursday, September 3rd 10:00 am-1:00 pm at RMS. This year, all students will be required to use a school-issued Chromebook, so if you do not have one, please come to the pick-up event. Also, you may bring in a Chromebook that is in need of repair at this time and Verizon Jetpacks (Internet Hotspots) that were issued to families may be returned to the school before the start of school. These devices are no longer active but are the property of EPSD.

  • Daily Wellness Check: To ensure the safety of everyone at school, parents of students who will be returning to school in-person in September will need to check off a health screening form in Skyward each morning before school. Here are the directions. After you do it once, it will be easy. It is just going to be a matter of making a part of your daily routine!

  • School Supplies: It's the time of year when the Back to School sales and advertisements pop up. Until we have our plans settled and an understanding of the requirements for social distancing, we will not be sending out a list of items that students may wish to bring to school. Sorry!

  • Middle School Athletics: RIPCOA, the organization that manages middle school sports is waiting to learn the plan of the Rhode Island Interscholastic League (the high school sports organization). RIPCOA will adopt the plan of RIIL. In the event that sports are back on in the fall, middle schools will start the season one week after RIIL.

It's time!

Happy Labor Day Weekend! We are pleased to say that the outstanding RMS Faculty and Staff came home on Thursday! It was a bittersweet moment as we came back to the school that we have loved for so many years, but we had to forgo the hugs and hanging out in person. (Anyone new to the school would probably not be surprised to learn that we are a tight knit community of friends and colleagues.) We worked to get ready for our students and meet some new challenges as we learn how to educate our kids who are both at home and inside the building. Over the next week, faculty and staff members will be at RMS putting together plans.

Guidance counselors are putting the finishing touches on students' schedules and we should have everything uploaded into Skyward by the end of the week. We realize how important it is for students and parents to know teachers and classes, so we will send out a message once all of the schedules are finalized. In the meantime, please take a look at the following announcements about the start of school.

Upcoming Events:

September 2020

    • 8 Tuesday: Parent Information Meetings (Grade 6) 6:00 pm (a link will be shared.)

    • 9 Wednesday: Parent Information Meetings (Grade 7 & 8) 6:00 pm (a link will be shared.)

    • 21 Monday: Grade 6, 7 & 8 All students both Distance Learning & In-Person

    • 28 Monday: Meet the Teachers Night 6:00-7:30 PM.

Announcements:

  • Orientation Week: You may be trying to make sense of the schedule above (and you are not alone!). In order to give as much attention as possible to kids who are both at home and at RMS, we will have a full day for kids who are in-person learning and also a full day for kids who are distance learning. This is not only for the kids, but also for teachers who will be doing this for the first time. In general, we will meet both groups of kids (in-persona and distance) individually for one day each and then bring them together on the third day. The reason it is going to take all week is because we want to bring in one grade at a time. We have a lot of protocols and procedures to go through with the kids who will be in the school and we want to create as safe an environment at school as possible during that time. Yes, it is definitely delaying the regular return of all kids to school, but we need to do it right and safe!

  • Schedules and Classes Information Update: Our guidance counselors are busy putting the finishing touches on student schedules. We should have them uploaded to Skyward by Friday, September 11th. Yes, this is very close to the beginning of school, but we hope you will understand that we have been responding to state and local requirements. When the schedules are finalized, we will also be sending information about first day of school protocols for students coming to RMS starting on September 14.

  • Screen-Lite Wednesday: The middle schools in East Providence will take on Screen-Light Wednesdays this year. All students (Grades 6-8) will be at home distance learning on Wednesdays, so that RMS can be deep-cleaned. A form will be available so that parents can ask questions during the meetings.

  • Chromebooks: This year, all students will be required to use a school-issued Chromebook. Students who used a Chromebook last school year will keep their device this year. If you did not pick up a Chromebook at RMS on September 3rd, please email Mrs. Costa, the Main Office secretary at gcosta@epschoolsri.com so you can arrange a time to pick one up.

  • Daily Wellness Check: To ensure the safety of everyone at school, parents of students who will be returning to school in-person in September will need to check off a health screening form in Skyward each morning before school. We're hard at work on the plan

If this is the first RMS Family Bulletin that you have received, welcome! During the school year, we send this bulletin out every other Sunday as a way of keeping the school community up-to-date with things that are happening at Riverside Middle School. Please bookmark this page as it is a source of a lot of information about RMS and a good resource throughout the year.

Things are quiet here at 179 Forbes St., but there are plenty of people hard at work putting together plans for the 2020-2021 school year. We are definitely coming down to the wire this year as plans continue to evolve, and as we work to respond to guidelines from the Rhode Island Department of Health and the Rhode Island Department of Education. Thank you to all of the members of our school community who have provided input into our re-entry plan. Thank you also to the students, parents, and staff members who have been remarkably patient and understanding as we get our plan together. It is a testament to the strength of our school community. With that said, here are some details about things that are happening 'at RMS'.

Upcoming Events:

August 2020

September 2020

    • 1 Tuesday: First Day of School for 6th Graders at RMS

    • 2 Wednesday: Distance Learning Grades 6-8

    • 7 Monday: Labor Day (no school)

    • 8 Tuesday: Primary Election Day (no school)

Announcements:

  • Distance Learning Request Form due on August 7th: Parents who choose the Distance Learning only option for their students must fill out the Distance Learning Request Form by Friday, August 7th. By making this request, parents agree that students will remain in the distance learning setting through the end of the first semester (January 25th).

  • Reopening Plan Brief: The East Providence School Department has put together a summary of the Re-entry Task Force Plan that was submitted to the Rhode Island Department of Education. You can read the brief on the EPSD website or use the links below.

  • Return to Learn Video Presentation: On July 28, 2020, Superintendent Kathryn Crowley and Assistant Superintendent Sandra Forand presented information about our 'Return to Learn' plan specific to the East Providence middle schools. You can watch a rebroadcast of the presentation here and check out the EPSD Youtube channel for video presentations and East Providence School Committee meetings.

  • Free and Reduced Meals Form Now On-Line: Families requesting free or reduced meals are now able to do so using an online form through MySchoolApps. This year we are accepting online applications only. You can apply from the privacy of your home, or anywhere with an internet connection. If you do not have access to the internet please contact the East Providence School Department at: 401-383-5382.

  • Summer Reading: There are some great titles on this year's RMS Summer Reading list. Be sure to check out the titles and the summer reading assignment. Click here for more details.

  • Yearbook Pick Up Event: We are sad to say that Lifetouch has not informed us when we will receive our 2019-2020 yearbooks. (They won't even give us a projected shipping date!) We are still planning on having our departed 8th graders come back to RMS to pick up their yearbooks and end-of-year awards as soon as we receive word from Lifetouch. As soon as we know, a message will be sent out :(

  • Schedules and Classes Information: With the requirements of RIDOH and RIDE, our re-entry plan, and distance learning option, we are tasked with creating new schedules for our 600 students. This is a pretty monumental task. We are working hard to get details worked out, but it looks like final schedules and rosters will not be available until the last week of August. We will have it worked out in time for students to return to school, but we ask your patience as plans evolve each day in response to the pandemic and other requirements.

Finally, I recognize that there are a lot of questions that have not been answered and everyone is getting anxious about the beginning of school. The purpose of this bulletin is simply to let everyone in our school community know that we are working to figure this all out. As I said before, we very much appreciate your patience and confidence in RMS. In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact me at rperry@epschoolsri.com or Mr. Salgueiro at gsalgueiro@epschoolsri.com if you have a question or concern. I hope that you are able to enjoy the warm summer weather. Most importantly, I hope that you and your family are safe and healthy.
