Our Approach to Learning
Physical Education classes are a great way to foster a healthy and active lifestyle. Their central theme - daily active living - explores four main concepts: movement activities, health benefits, interacting positively with others, and personal responsibility.
The Physical Education team at DAAHS strives to give students the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to lead an active and healthy lifestyle. Whether it be traditional sports, fitness/health lessons with our schools Athletic Trainer, teaching new games for understanding, or participation in a wide variety of field trips and theme days, students are given multiple options to stay active and healthy in both traditional and non-traditional ways. Students will leave our program with a higher level of physical literacy and an appreciation for active and healthy living.
Our classes regularly utilize three large gymnasiums, a fitness center, wellness studio, dance studio, indoor track and turf area. We have an equipment room full of high quality materials for games and for learning.
Courses Offered
Physical Education 10 (co-ed) provides the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to lead an active, healthy lifestyle. Students will earn 3-credits in Physical Education 10 to meet High School Graduation requirements. This is combined with an additional 3-credits. Students choose their preference:
Physical Education 10 includes related CTS modules
Physical Education 10 plus CALM (in person)
Wellness (Physical Education 10 plus Yoga 15) that provides an alternative way to learn the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to personally lead an active, healthy lifestyle
Physical Education 20 and 30 are optional courses and involve increased exposure to life-skill activities and leadership experience. The skills developed in these courses help you make choices that lead to an active, healthy lifestyle. Students can select the best choice for their learning needs;
Physical Education 20 includes related CTS modules
Wellness 20 (Physical Education 20 plus Yoga 25)
Physical Education 30 (5 credits) for post-secondary programs and scholarships that require 5-credits of Physical Education 30
Sports Performance provides learning about the factors for sport for life. Classroom and activity learning model long-term athlete development for students to improve their own athletic performance.
Learning Connections
Connected Learning
DAAHS has a broad range of both traditional and non-traditional PE equipment that provides students with numerous opportunities and ideas to stay active.
DAAHS is fortunate to have our very own Athletic Trainer. Our trainer provides our classes with several lessons throughout the year around fitness and health and is a readily available support in the fitness area.
Each time our program brings in or attends a field trip, we ask that the leaders of the trip speak on their career pathway and the things they enjoy about a job that is within the physical education/recreation realm.
Our City of Edmonton partners have been a great resource in educating our students on what it is like to work at a recreation center or to lead a fitness class.
Extracurricular Opportunities
DAAHS has fitness and barbell clubs, an intramurals club, and numerous athletic teams to be a part of.
Each year, the athletics department hires a handful of students to help with gameday set-up and scorekeeping.
The Physical Education team at DAAHS organizes several theme days each semester. We have done Squid Games, Native Youth Olympics, and Winter Snowball (Dodgeball) Extravaganza to name a few.
Our classes have taken part in field trips such as Acrobatic Yoga, Dance Workshops, Skating, Curling, Fitset Ninja Obstacle Courses, and more. We will continue adding exciting trips and presenters to our program.
Our program is fortunate in that we are in a unique partnership with the City of Edmonton. Our students regularly share space with city patrons in the fitness center, on the running track, and on our turf space. Our city partners have been able to give career talks and lead us through wellness classes.
