ACTIVITY SCRIPT

Storytelling technique

The narration for retelling this famous Malaysian folklore uses the In Media Res technique as it begins at the climax with Sang Kancil, surrounded by crocodiles in the heat of the action. The story then starts at the beginning to explain how he got there.

AUTHOR'S NOTE |

✿  Please note that the tale may differ from its original narration as the author has adapted the story to accommodate the activity and the level of pupils in the primary ESL classroom.

2. Divide pupils into small groups and have them retell the story of Kancil and Crocodile in their own words using the stones. The teacher should encourage them to use the vocabulary and sentence structures they have learned during the storytelling session.

3. Have a class discussion about the story. Ask the pupils questions such as ‘What did you like about the story?’, ‘Who is your favorite character and why?’, ‘What did you learn from the story?’ and so on.

4. Teacher ends the activity by encouraging the pupils to use storytelling stones in future storytelling sessions.
