Estimate the measurement of the width of your finger for the band and the length of your finger for the head of the puppet.

STEP 03

Roughly draw a placeholder for the character.

STEP 04

Draw the character. You could use markers to accentuate the lines and colors for fun.

STEP 05

Cut out the final design of your puppet including the band.

STEP 06

Tape both ends of the band together depending on your finger size.

STEP 07

Repeat the steps for other characters. Wear the finger puppet and you are ready to start the storytelling session.

Watch the storytelling demonstration for visual guidance.

ACTIVITY SCRIPT

Storytelling TEChNIQUE

The narration for this storytelling activity uses the Mountain structure to tell Mahsuri’s story - from a thriving young beauty to a wrongly executed lady. There is a rising action as Mahsuri fights against the accusations, and it climaxes when Mahsuri is executed with her family’s dagger. There is a good resolution as the curse ends after her shrine is built in apology.

AUTHOR'S NOTE |

✿  Please note that the tale may differ from its original narration as the author has adapted the story to accommodate the activity and the level of pupils in the primary ESL classroom.

2. Ask the pupils to answer questions about the story to check their understanding. For example, you could ask them to summarize the story in their own words, identify the main characters, or explain the values that could be learned from the story.

3. Ask the pupils create a finger puppet based on the character that interests them the most and present their work.

Encourage the rest of the class to ask questions about their peers' chosen character.

3. Teacher ends the activity by encouraging the pupils to use storytelling puppets in future storytelling sessions.
