Mrs. Hagedorn Speech-Language Therapy

Dear Parents: 3/17/20

I am posting some information and links to help you target your child’s communication goals during the school closure. As we navigate these unprecedented times, please consider the following when working with your child:

*A schedule is great, they have been following one at school!

*Use visuals when you can! These could be simple pictures drawn on a whiteboard or paper.

*Remember to take breaks as needed!

*Prompt or assist your child as needed!

*Read your child’s cues, if they have done enough, come back to things at another time.

*Offer rewards, verbal praise, or working for charts!

*Any activity is a communication opportunity!

*Any simple household activity or game is an opportunity to practice communication, speech sounds, following directions, turn taking, etc.

*For those of you who have students using communication devices, have the device near you while doing academic and fun/communication activities! Model one word on the device during your activities. Check out the link below for AAC daily activities.

*For parents of students on the Autism Spectrum, check out the link for the Autism Survival Toolbox.

*IF YOU HAVE A STORYBOOK AT HOME, YOU HAVE ONE OF THE BEST TOOLS TO TARGET SPEECH AND LANGUAGE GOALS!

** IF WORKING ON SPEECH SOUNDS, FIND WORDS WITH YOUR CHILD’S SOUNDS AND HAVE THEM SAY THEM.

**IF WORKING ON LANGUAGE SKILLS, ASK A WHO/WHAT/WHERE/WHEN/WHY QUESTION ON AFTER EACH PAGE, OR HAVE YOUR CHILD NAME SOME VOCABULARY IN THE PICTURES.

**IF WORKING ON FLUENCY OF SPEECH (STUTTERING), HAVE YOUR CHILD REPEAT A WORD/SENTENCE USING THEIR SMOOTH SPEECH STRATEGIES AND SLOW, EASY SPEECH.

**KEEP IT SHORT AND FUN!!

FOR MY OLDER STUDENTS AT CENTRAL JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL:

**IF YOU ARE WORKING ON YOUR R SOUND, ANY READING MATERIAL IS A WAY TO PRACTICE USING YOUR CORRECT SOUND. REMEMBER CORRECT PLACEMENT FOR A GOOD R SOUND!! TRY TO PRACTICE 5-10 MINUTES DAILY TO KEEP YOUR SKILLS UP. CHECK OUT THE ARTICULATION PRACTICE PAGE IN THE SPEECH THERAPY PRACTICE LINKS BELOW.

**IF YOU ARE WORKING ON FLUENCY OF SPEECH (STUTTERING) CHECK OUT THE FLUENCY ACTIVITIES PAGE IN THE SPEECH THERAPY PRACTICE LINKS BELOW.

**IF YOU ARE WORKING ON LANGUAGE SKILLS: CHECK OUT THE LANGUAGE ACTIVITIES PAGE IN THE SPEECH THERAPY PRACTICE LINKS BELOW, READING AND DISCUSSING THE TEXT IS ALSO A GREAT WAY TO PRACTICE LANGUAGE SKILLS.

If you have ANY questions or concerns, or need additional ideas for activities, please do not hesitate to contact me! My email is hagedornc@epd86.org Feel free to email and I will get back to you as soon as possible!

Thank you and I hope your family stays healthy during this time. I will miss my students very much!!
