Craft and Functional Art is a studio course that explores the intersection of art, culture, and craftsmanship through hands-on creative projects. Using a variety of media—such as ceramics, weaving, batik, jewelry, and papier-mâché—students will design and create art that blends aesthetic expression with practical function. This course takes an in-depth exploration of various printmaking media, including linocut, intaglio, monotype printing, and screen-printing, while incorporating mixed media techniques to expand creative possibilities. Printmaking combines drawing skills with color theory, technical skills, and graphic design to create unique pieces of art. Students will explore how printmaking has evolved as a social and artistic tool. Projects may combine printmaking with other media, encouraging experimentation and personal expression. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to design and produce a line of t-shirts and poster prints, reflecting professional applications and potential career paths.

Drawing and Painting I is a comprehensive studio course that develops students’ skills in both traditional and contemporary two-dimensional art forms. Using a variety of media—such as graphite, charcoal, pastel, watercolor, acrylic, and oil pastel—students will refine their techniques while deepening their understanding of the elements of art and principles of design. Emphasis is placed on creativity, self-expression, and the development of personal artistic style. Students will study historical and modern artists to explore methods, media, and the role of critical analysis in art. Throughout the course, students will maintain a sketchbook and portfolio to document growth and showcase their artistic progress.
Students who have completed 1810 Art I are encouraged to take 1808 Drawing and Painting II.

Students will study and analyze the work of diverse artists to deepen their understanding of artistic processes, critical analysis, and aesthetic judgment. Projects are designed to promote independence, creativity, and the development of an individual artistic style. Throughout the course, students will maintain a sketchbook, an artist’s book, and both physical and digital portfolios to document and present their growth.

This course is designed to be a culminating experience for students who plan to further their art education after high school and/ or view visual art explorations as a lifelong passion. Students will complete projects that reflect a focus in 2 or 3 art areas in regard to specific media and/ or themes. Students will be engaged in a state of continual reflection and analysis regarding their work and the work of other artists that they have selected to investigate. Students will be required to maintain a sketchbook and actual and virtual portfolio. They will also be required to create an exhibit of their work to be presented at the Spring Arts Show or other district sponsored venue.

This class will focus on developing students’ computer skills related to basic design concepts. Students will learn and apply fundamentals of the software package Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator), web design, and image editing, drawing and graphic animation. Projects will coordinate technical skills with organization, management, communication, ethics and teamwork. Topics will include correcting and enhancing digital photographs, advanced layering, masks and channels, vector drawing techniques, preparing files for the web and producing and printing consistent color with Adobe Photoshop, creating and editing shapes, transforming objects, drawing, coloring and painting, working with type and layers and applying effects with Adobe Illustrator. Students will also explore Animation software in many of its aspects from the very simplest animations to some fairly complex programming projects. Students will create examples and create projects ranging from advertisements to simple game like animations.

Students will create a digital portfolio showcasing their work across a range of media and design applications. This course is entirely computer-based and designed for students interested in pursuing creative design fields or advanced art studies.

Projects emphasize creative problem-solving, conceptual development, and personal style through a variety of photographic genres such as portrait, landscape, and abstract imagery. Students will build a professional-quality portfolio that demonstrates mastery of composition, editing, and visual storytelling.

In this AP course students will explore the vast array of visual images that have been created by humans through many different time periods and places. Units will include: Contemporary Global Art, Twentieth Century Art, Asian and Oceanic Art, African Art, American Art, Early and Later European Art, Ancient Mediterranean Art, Global Prehistoric Art. Students will also experience art through virtual and on-site field trips to local and regional galleries and museums. This is not a studio class. Summer work will be required and will be due the first week of the school year and may include: reading assignments, short writing assignments and viewing art virtually and on-site. At the completion of this course, students are strongly encouraged to take an AP Art History Exam for possible college credit. The content of the course and the focus of instruction will be geared toward College Board and AP curriculum expectations.

A year-long class designed to produce the yearbook for the school. Creating the yearbook involves many applicable skills that prepare students for several types of jobs, like marketing, graphic design, journalism, accounting, photography, and more. Students will be expected to be involved in the school community to appropriately report on events and should be comfortable using a camera, interviewing students and adults, and writing about events.

The Visual Arts Independent Study course is designed for students who have a desire to extend and apply their learning and art skills in an independent, project-based format. To qualify, students must take three art classes at the intro level, one at the Intermediate level, and hold a B average. The course is open to 11th and 12th graders. Students will apprentice with the teacher, with whom they will outline and fulfil learning activities and projects. A culminating activity as a final assessment is encouraged but not required. The course will be graded on a pass/fail basis.
