Latin 1-2 (Latin I) is the introductory year for the overall Latin curriculum at EPCHS. I understand that you may have little to no experience with the language, history, culture, or influence of Latin or the ancient Romans. All of these things come with time and learning. We will focus on building vocabulary through stories and activities.
GRADING:
You will be graded on assignments done in class, quizzes, tests, projects, and participation. Each of these areas are graded by total number of points rather than a weighted percentage. The difficulty and frequency of each determines the number of points it is worth.
In-class assignments are graded on the basis of accuracy or completion; the determination of which will be up to my own discretion.
Quizzes will cover vocabulary, history, culture, and/or other topics as needed. Half points are awarded when general understanding is present despite errors. You may retake ONE quiz per quarter for full credit.
Tests are generally non-existent at the first year level; instead there will be more formative assessments such as writing and activities to apply learning.
Projects will be assigned generally on a quarterly basis. The projects will be collaborative in nature but working alone may be permitted at times. Creativity and hard work are always rewarded!
Participation means following along during lessons, paying attention, taking notes, and actively learning. I understand that not everyone is eager to volunteer answers in class, but I do expect that you are able to respond if called upon or demonstrate that you are trying to understand.
You receive 2 points per day as participation. 1 point is for being on task and actively engaging in class. The other point is for coming to class prepared; if you show up to class without a notebook/paper, a pencil, or your Chromebook (also charged), you will not receive that point.
Extra Credit is a privilege, NOT a right!
LATE WORK
Late work is accepted in accordance with the school’s policy as outlined in the handbook. However, I do deduct 10% off the assignment for each day it is late if not due to an excused absence. I will not accept an assignment after it is 3 days late.
